Sticky Shifter Question

Buddy has a 89 Yamaha Virago 750 with a sticky shifter. It will shift up the gears just fine, but when you go to shift down the shift peg doesn't always return fully up. If I just nudge it up and then press down again it will shift just fine. I have no real experience in this area, but I'm guessing the clutch springs are old and not forcing it out like they should, am I right? This is just in the basket where you just remove the outer housing and it doesn't involve removing the engine and splitting the lower case right?

Most likely it isnt the clutch but the shift drum and/or springs.

And sadly that involves taking covers off and doing all kinds of crap.

I'll try to find a parts diagram and point it out.

For some reason Yamaha used wierd springs for the shifter return. It was a standard shape but had wierd rates and material quality. I've broken a few just trying to install them.

Over time Guys would find that the starter clutch springs would be loose and the shifter springs would be too.

Shifter springs, thats what I was thinking (I think  :D ) Ok, I'll find a parts diagram and with luck a manual online. I'd seen some posts about it being done on the sohc4's and it didn't mention pulling the engine so hopefully it won't be to terrible. For now I adjusted the rod that goes from the shifter peg to the actual shifter rod out a bit so it's more of a positive shift control (does that make any sense?)

ewww I think I know what I'm looking at and yes the lower case would have to be split wouldn't it, as anything to the left of that oil seal would be inside. Crap, totally not what I thought it was. Well, better to find out now than later  ;D

Um.... I don't think so. I cannot seem to recall where I am sitting but it should all be under a side cover.

I'll give it a look.

Double checked.... it should all be under the left side engine cover.

Careful of the starter clutch assembly when you take it off. You WILL need a new gasket to put it back on.
