Topic: 1982 honda cb650 loss of power

I have a 1982 honda cb650, put in a brand new (charged) batt. starrted bike , rode about 1/2 hour no problem. Stopped and sat for about  45 min. started back up no problem was on the road for about  10 minutes light went dim and lst power. Could not start with electric start, but poped the clutch and drove another 10 minutes and parked. 15 minutes later went to start would not ,with electric start popped clutch drove home no problem lights worked not dim. Next day started no problem,l rode for about 15 minutes and parked it. Yesterday would not turn over jumped it with a battery pack started right up, let it idle for about 10-15 minutes, turned off tryed to restart, would not. Jumped the battery, started , after about 6 minutes lights started to dim and died. would not start with out jump.

Sounds like intermittent charging.  You need to check the entire charging system, starting with the commutator brushes in the generator.

Heh, it sure seemed like a year anyway.    I hope it helps you. In the end, she sent the rotor and stator to guy to be rewound ($70 each and did a great job), new brushes, new R/R (it was ok but she went with a newer one that starts charging at close to idle and is keeping the orig as a backup), checked the headlight bucket wiring (found a couple of bad spots), redid the turn signals (corroded inside), checked all the wiring front to back... on and off for quite a while. The rotor was the main culprit though, the other stuff was just to make the most of the charge she was getting. They don't have much extra, even if they are running great. There is a great diagram pdf in there and on Hush's rebuild thread that is easy to follow and understand. It pinpointed where her faults were pretty accurately. Get a multimeter. You're gonna need it.
