And when you can see the end of the passage turn the motor over with the starter motor and see if oil is coming through the passage - hold in the rubber plug with your finger when operating the starter motor in case oil pressure pushes it out. While you have the bearing cover off check the condition of the small O ring that forms a seal around the passage and that the passages in the cover are clear. If oil flows through the passage replace the bearing cover and again operate the starter motor and check that oil is not leaking from the plug or bearing cover O ring. If oil doesn't flow through the passage you may have a blockage or the pump is not pumping. In this case remove the plug, operate the starter motor to see if oil is coming across from the pump and also check the oil passage that branches off to the bearing housing.Pat

My comments in my previous post was made assuming that you have the clutch pack removed. Do not use the starter motor to turn the motor over if the clutch is installed unless you have the countershaft cover and bearing installed - otherwise damage may occur. Pat

Hi All...I do not have the clutch pack installed if you are referring to the fricition and metal discs.

I have to remove the shift mechanism to get the bearing cover off...correct?

Yes. I suggest that you take some photos of the shift mechanism before you remove it and put the pieces on a bit of wire to hold them in the order of removal. I have just had a look at my spare counter shaft beaaring cover and at the end of each passage there is a metal plug -they can be seen from the outside of the bearing cover. They need to be in place outwise oil will bypass the internals of the transmission shaft. Just another thing to check. Pat

Okay...the results are in...

Remove the counter shaft bearing cover, and turned the motor over with the rubber plug left in...nice fresh oil flow through the opening leading up into the counter bearing shaft cover.

Then, blew air through the counter shaft channels (metal plugs are in place) and the shaft...can feel the air clearly though it...sprayed aerosal seafoam through all channels and shafts...it clearly passes through all openings...letting soak and then will spray compressed air through again.

My plan is the reassembly counter bearing shaft cover, and check for oil flow to clutch basket again...if it doesn't make it this time I must missed something...thoughts?...thanks, ron.

did you blow air or starting fluid through the countershaft bearing cover?
if not, blow it through the top hole, then the center hole, then the top hole again.
I had a chunk of orange gasket goo in there.

Ron, did you check the O ring that sits between the bearing cover and transmission body? I think the size is 5mm x 2.4mm. Otherwise you show be good for a recheck after reassembly. Pat

Yes, I now have oil flow through the shaft.

Now to reassemble the shift mechanism and clutch...one problem down, probably lots more around the corner.

Read about the aluminum clutch plate...will try to be very careful with that.

Induatrial Cafe, I sent Ron a message suggesting that he check the O ring under the bearing cover and when he was ready to test to see if oil was flowing through the centre of the main shaft give the motor some revs just in case he was testing at idle speed. Other than that I don't know what has fixed the problem. Pat

I don't either...the little o-ring looked fine. When i first reassembled after removing and cleaning the bearing cover, I did not get any oil flow to the far end of the shaft...alot was leaking at the top of the bearing cover where it feeds into the shaft...I though I might be missing a part like an o-ring up there but didn't see anything on the fiche. So I blew out the shaft again, and with a long thin kabob type stick fed it all the way through to make sure there was no blockage.

Then i re-starte the bike (holding rubber stopper in which like to pop out as someone...pat?...noted), I was running at idle with some revving...no oil, till i tillted the bike to the right and a nice flow began and even with the bike straightup I got a constant dripping.

Can really bad oil develop blockages in small channels...cuz that's my guess...all the cleaning must have done something.

My old friction discs were rusting on the metal edges...I think that someone mentioned this was a sign of a lack of oil...well, i hope this fixes my shifting problem...if not, I'm SOL...k, thx.

there may have been some gummed up old oil that was free'd up after you poked around in there.

OK, what if the little rubber plug is damaged or lost??? It doesn't come in gasket kits,
and I don't think Honda carries it anymore??? Anyone have a replacement idea???
Please post, almost lost mine in the shuffle of parts, but wondered ( what if!!!!)

Have you tried a Honda dealer with the capabilities of searching the entire dealer network for stock...I know of a place in Lansing, MI that will do this over the phone...also check ebay for new old stock items.

If worse comes to worse, u might be able to use the old with some application of silicon...I don't know if this will work and others may have much better ways to work around this...let me know if you want the Lansing contact...thx
