Yep, those Hondaman ignitions are great, I've got three of them, and even though they don't throw a fat blue spark like my Dyna S, they're still my favorite, particularly after Mark built me a couple at my request with "on/off" switches so I can change from "Hondaman" to just "Honda" at the flick of a switch, and completely isolate the ignition as an "anti-theft" device. ;D

Hey Suzy....  ;D
Did you ever try the Transistorized Ignition with the Dyna coils? My test Dyna coils nearly light up the room in the dark with those big blue flames when I'm "burning in" these units. I'm going to transfer these coils to my own bike shortly.

How do you think they would work with Dyna 3 ohm coils and that maxi dwell with the chevy points?

How do you think they would work with Dyna 3 ohm coils and that maxi dwell with the chevy points?

Well, since the points don't wear electrically any more with this ignition, there wouldn't be much need for the Maxi-Dwell. That whole name was a misnomer: what they should have called it was the "Maxi-Current" ignition, as the ventilated points gave a full-ring contact and thus improved high-RPM coil currents, compared to Honda's stock points after 1970 (prior to that, you could get ventilated ground-side contacts for them, after that, had to make your own). Without transistors, the Maxi-Dwell unit has some advantage in the form of longer-lived electrical faces, compared to the regular points. With transistors, their built-in timing light won't work, as there is no coil kickback to light the little neon bulb.

You can run the Transistorized Ignition with Dyna 3-ohm coils in 2 different ways:
1. Use the Resistor Pack in line with the coils and the "Basic" ignition driving it.
2. Use the "Dyna-capable" type Ignition, but with a stock sealed-beam headlight.

The 3-ohm coils draw a lot of current, which impacts these older alternator systems. If you already have other accessories, like a 55/65W headlight (or bigger), and then add the 3-ohm coils, your battery will chronically run low. The Resistor Pack adds 1 ohm of resistance to the coil (+) side, which only slightly reduces the extra high voltage from those coils (see my test post), while making the bike happier.

One rider from SOHC4 contacted me about  constantly-low battery problem on his CB750: he was running an 80 watt halogen headlight and 3-ohm coils. It required almost a daily battery charge just to ride to work and back. First he switched back to stock coils, which almost solved the problem by itself. Last I heard, he was going back to a more standard halogen headlight in hopes of improving the ignition later.

For max electrical performance, but with a strong headlight and coils, I still recommend the 1034 taillight bulb (stock) and a 50/60W halogen headlight, with Transistorized Ignition, a Resistor Pack, and Dyna 3-ohm coils. That's going to be my setup, as soon as I have time to stop building ignitions for everyone else, and work on my bike!

G'Day Mark, no mate, I've only used it with the OEM coils on my K0, so that spark isn't all that brilliant compared to my K1 with the Dyna S and Dyna 3 OHM coils. Works great though, especially at high RPM's. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Well, somehow I'll have to talk you into adding those Resistor Packs onto one of those HM-equipped bikes, and put those Dyna coils on then. That ought to wake up those plugs!   ;D

Yeah well I've still got the 5 OHM Dyna coils sitting in a box Mark, should I use the resistors with them, or is it not necessary? The biggest problem I have at the moment is time, there just aren't enough hours in a weekend to get stuff done! ;D

"TIME". Boy, I hear that!  :-\

The 5-ohm coils don't need the resistors, just those 3-ohm ones do. I'm making some 2-ohm resistors for those who want to try out the 2.5 ohm Dynas, too.

Well SteveK0 and I went for a good ride today, and maybe my last on the K0 until spring. The Indian club put on a ride to raise money for the bushfire victims of Flowerdale, and to inject some badly needed money into the local economy.

We rode thru Kinglake West, Pheasant Creek, Kinglake, Strathewan and Flowerdale, and as this was my first personal visit to the area since before the fires I was shocked by the scale of the devastation, just miles and miles of burned matchsticks, and what surprised me the most is how far you can see when there is absolutely no grass or undergrowth to get in the way.

But I digress. I also clocked up my 800th mile on the K0 fitted with Hondaman's magic ignition, and so far it's working like a dream! I've recently dropped the #120 main jets and replaced them with #105's, and with Mark's recommendation of swapping the D8 plugs for D7's, it's now a "starts first kick" deal and idles as smooth as denim (needs new throttle cables before I can synch the carbs again) at 1000 RPM. It'll also rev cleanly to 10,000 RPM in the first three gears, and I think I surprised a couple of guys on more modern bikes today in some short, but spirited roll-on duals along the way.

Anyway, I thought I better let you know that 2 years on, Marks ignition is still working faultlessly, so if you haven't bought one yet, do yourself a favor and order one today! ;D

First time on this site. Fantastic info! I've already found the answer I was looking for........BUT........ that's led to a whole new set of questions.
First an formost, how can I reach Hondaman? I cann't get to his profile, ( I don't know if it's me or the site).
I need one of his ignitions!!! Points in my 77 cb750 k breaking down at high rpm. Running hella h4 headlight and stock coils/virgin factory wiring and lighting otherwise.
I now know I can run my 79 750 dohc coils with the 79 650 sohc  ignition (pulse generator) I just scored, and it'll run, but I'm worried about burning up the 30+ year old wiring!
If someone can get me to Hondaman, or vice-versa, I'd sure appreciate it. Sounds like his ignition and some advice on resistors is just what I need to update this beautiful, original, classic!
Thanks, and y'all can reach me direct at blkjack07@bellsouth.net
