new coils for old bikes! (CB's)
« on: July 16, 2009, 08:07:46 AM »
so i was thinking this morning ( i know that can be dangerious)

i have a 96 subaru with a "coil" pack on top of the manafold and it has 3 wires to turn it on..... (right side wire is switched ground, middle wire 12V +, and left side wire is switched ground)

so i was thinking that you could use one of those on your bike and have a HIGH output effecient coil pack and then just install your wires and use resistor plugs and Bob's your uncle right???

anyone have any thoughts on this:

there are many other cars out there that use a fast saturation effecient coil pack that has 3 easy to geto wires i just happened to pick the subaru because i've got extra coil packs and i was thinking of trying one out! and it seems like as long as you got everything hooked up right and even used a relay you would be OK to run that setup!

I don't have a comment one way or the other on your choice of alternate coils, but I will share with you what works well for me.

I run Dyna S ignitions on all of my 4 cylinder Hondas.  I buy early 80's Honda coils off Ebay.  usually less than $20 a pair shipped.  Then I buy a set of solid copper core 7mm Dyna plug wires from Z1 Enterprises ($17).  The early 80's Honda coils have replaceable plug wires.  The Dyna wires come two to a pack with factory pressed on end caps on all ends.  You cut the two plug wires to length and slide the cut end into the Honda coil, twist on the securing cap and you're all done.

Never had a coil failure (something that I can't say about aftermarket coils that came with bikes that I have purchased).  So, for $40 you can have a completely bullet proof coil and spark plug system.  $120 for a Dyna S and you're set.

I've never had clearance problems with any of the bikes/tank combinations that I have put this system on.

To date I have installed these coils and wires on CB750's, CB550's, CB400F's, CB350F's, GS1000 Suzukis, KZ900/1000 Kawasakis.

My usual mounting technique is to use 1/4" All-Thread with 1/4-20 nuts securing the all thread to either side of main frame backbone.  then additional nuts, the coils and two more nuts.
