Cosmetic changes. What do you guys like?
« on: July 17, 2009, 09:15:04 AM »
I am thinking about cleaning up my bike's appearance a bit, but I thought I'd get some other opinions and ideas first.

My bike is a reasonably clean, bone-stock 550K2 with 12k on it. My thoughts are to polish the cases, valve cover and forks, and to grind-smooth the obvious frame welds (the collar area and behind the covers. The clear on the cases looks like crap and those welds are some of the worst I've ever seen! I think an apprentice welded my frame...

This will never be a museum bike, so keeping it %100 original (like the yellow paint on the bolts...) seems pointless. But, you never know what will set the value back.

Also, what do engine mods (top end) do for the value? Nothing? Or can I expect to get back what I put into it. (were talking $200 or so) It doesn't really matter to me. I think I'm gonna go for it anyways...

It's Very....

.... rare for these to be, in the strictest sense, a good financial investment.

Rebuilding, restoring, modifying, customizing, cafeing, etc., leads to a good portion of your money being thrown away.  As a return rich "trust" for your dollars, it is a very poor financial builder.  The cost of parts, man hours and hourly wages for work done (even if done by yourself, your time is money and accountable), ad infinitum.

Except when....

You love these bikes.  Whether the stock classic 4 cylinder beauty in mint condition, ready to eat up the miles of asphalt ribbon calling to you and waiting.... or the rebuilt one that you've sweated and bled for, worked on long hours late into the night, and reached deep into your pockets for because you love the classic lines, performance, and reliability that other bike brands envy....

You can ride with pride for what you've got and what you've done.

So, what I am hearing, is do whatever you feel like... It doesn't matter a bit.

That's about right. Do as you please and let your bike be an expression of yourself.
That's the real reward in the build. Pride!

There were so many of these relatively inexpensive bikes build by Honda that it's highly unlikely that they will ever be collectable.

Chop chop, lets see what you've come up with then.

Cheers
