Suggestions for Best Road Maps?
« on: July 20, 2009, 05:17:57 PM »
New chain and sprockets are in the mail. When they get here, I'm leaving.

I want to take a good, simple trip to Chicago and back but I don't want to take interstate highways (boring). Old state highways and backroads are the way to go, as far as I'm concerned.

What is a good road atlas that all you travelers use? I saw a Harley Davidson spiral-bound map at a book store that looked pretty damned detailed. Let's hear your thoughts!

I like the road maps the states put out for free.  You can get them at visitors' centers.  They are better than the ones you pay 4 or 5 bucks for at convenience stores and truck stops.  As for atlases, I haven't seen one that is worth a damn.  Anything by Rand-McNally sucks for detail and accuracy when you get off the beaten track.

Get a AAA membership...it is good for 2 reasons...first is, the Plus plan covers bikes and secondly free trip tiks. Just let them know where you are heading and that you want to avoid freeways.

where in Idaho are you? the ones I got from the ranger station all cost 3 bucks

Boise area, but you can get them free at any visitor's center in the state.  They also have them at ports of entry (weigh stations).  I've gotten them from cops, too.

I'm insured by USAA so I get free roadside, which is sweeeeet.

I guess a good way to do it, if I followed ofreen's advise, would be to get a map each time I enter a new state. Keep it interesting. That is, of course, for longer, multi-state trips. Chicago and back should be no problem.

If you really want to find the back roads you would be pretty well served by these. I have a couple of these books and they are very detailed. No substitute for local knowledge, though.

Those look nice. A bit on the pricey side, though. And I am a 'free' kinda guy as I'm sure most of us are.

Take route 3 up as far as you can to Quincy.
That should be a good place to start, then go from there where the map looks good to go.

I like the free maps at the visitor's centers when I cross the state line, the DOT maps are more than accurate and up to date.

Why don't you seek out & travel old Route 66 to Chicago? Just make sure to avoid the bypass's around the towns that were added in the early 60's(?). Going through the actual towns along the Route is the correct and original alignment of Route 66.  8) 8)

Sprockets came in. All I need is the chain and I'me a goner.
