Did you take the petcock out of the 78 tank?  Did it have a fuel filter (screen)  on it?

I tried to replace my fuel filter and , first it didn't have one.  Second the one I bought (from Honda) would not fit.

It does have a long screen that fits on top of the petcock and goes up into the tank, different then the one that was on my '75 tank/petcock.  So yes I have the screen/filter.  I bought the tank and petcock from the same guy.  He understood the '77/'78 petcocks where hard to get and priced them separately.

Thanks RSchaefer
The hole in my tank where the petcock screws in is just big enough for the fuel tube.  There was no way the filter screen was going to fit in.
I'm not sure what's wrong with my tank, it all looks stock including the paint.
Anyway I have an filter in the fuel line and it works fine.

Hi - thanks for replies about splitting my silencer from collector box. The pictures I posted were when I got the exhaust. I've since removed the clamping collar, but there isn't any movement between the 2 parts - wondering if there's a corrosion build up between the collector box stub and the bore of the silencer? I'm also needing to rebuild the baffle - I think I've got a plan for this... please can anyone post any close up photos looking at the back of the muffler, so I can see what it should look like when I've finnished? David Silver lists the seal as discontinued...I have found a plce that has those sort of seals (closest size is 60mm bore x 68mm OD - just need to work out if I can make use of that by boring out to 63.5mm - wall thicknes getting down though...). Anyway will post my results!
Several months on I've sorted my muffler issues!
First - to split the header pipes from muffler I had to cut off the header pipes where they go into the silencer then with dremel type grinder had to cut away the remaining metal and the gasket. Since then I've actually managed to get hold of an unused set of collector pipes quite cheap - no scrape marks on the under side of the collector area!
Second - the gasket. I got hold of a new one, so don't have to machine the other one I got (by the way size of new gasket I.D. 63.5mm, O.D.70mm, length 30mm).
Third - muffler. Hmmm - I was hoping to find somewhere to get it repaired then rechromed, but quickly found out that repairers don't like dealing with mufflers (rechroming wise that is - not good for their chroming tanks or something...). So got hold of baffle which Itrimmed and fettled O.D. to fit in muffler. Need to tig weld a nut into end of muffler inner to fix new baffle... In the end solved this by finding a NOS muffler! Not very common. Hope to post picture soon of the final result... :)

Anyone know where I can get hold of replacement tacho or speedo dials for F1 (they are a green colour...)? Particularly the rev counter...? Also wondering about touching up the red/orange paint on the ones I've got - any ideas of what to use, or am I just going to make a complete hash of it?? :-\

My gauge faces where faded and I was looking for replacements.  There was a guy here on the forum who was making replacements for a reasonable price but he said he moved to a different area in his company and now lacks the machine.  You can search and find him.  I sent him an email a month ago to see if he was back in biz and he never replied.

I purchased a set of gauges on eBay for $70 that appeared to have really good gauge faces.  When I received them they where great, nearly new.  That is to say, the gauges faces looked like new, everything else was rusted and the outside rim dinged up.  All I wanted where the gauge faces.  That said, like others have mentioned, you end up with extra parts that may have value once you complete your rebuild.

I removed the face plates from the eBay gauges using the paint can key method and they look super.  I too was looking for the orange/red floresent paint for the end of the needle and found this on the forum (http://www.hipoparts.com/fluorescent-speedo-gauge-needle-restoration-paint/) looks like the way to go.  I was also going to check with a hobby shop as I'm sure they would have fluorescent paints.

I did see other gauges on eBay so I would start there.

Thanks for the reply RSchaefer - I think the "paint can" method looks good. Bought myself a paint can opener -excellent tool for this job! Only £2 cost! Paint - yes hobby shop sounds good, also wondering about trying to "touch up" the red zone but wonder if I'll just make a mess!
How did you start off levering the chrome(?) rim? Also how did you swage it back in place afterwards? Keeping an eye on ebay - done quite well for parts there recently...
Gauges - does anyone know where the thread is that has pictures of the different model gauge dials?? I remember finding something early in the year but don't seem to be able to find it now...

Personally I would not try and touch up the red zone, I think you might be disappointed and then start looking for an alternative.  To search, make sure you go back to the main home page for the forum.  While its not obvious, the searches go from what ever thread your in, rather then the entire forum, at least that's my experience.  Lots of posts associated with these search terms "gauge face".

Here are a couple of good ones:

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=88015.msg989242#msg989242

http://www.cb750faces.com/webshop.php

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=57350.msg621381#msg621381

Lots of people here are downloading templates, printing them on high quality printer and then gluing them to the existing faceplace.

Relative to taking the ring off to open the gauge:  Patience of a camel is recommended!  I took a file and sharpened the edge of the paint key.  In some cases I had to use a knife blade to slightly spread the lip in order to have the key fit in the gap.  What I did notice is the rim is somewhat loose on the gauge.  In other words, if you push the rim towards your working area from behind you will open a gap.  Also when you push up on the ring towards your work area you will be able to bite better with the key.

Obviously you should be working on the ring from the backside of the gauge in order to hid your work once reassembled.

I did not have to fully open/spread the ring lip as the top rim of the gauge is easily shifted once you start loosening the lip.  I probably went around the lip twice with the key and spread the lip a little further each time.  I then pushed the lip towards the work area and was able to pry up on the rim of the top of the gauge and it popped right off.

Popping the needle off took allot more pressure then I thought it would.  I dripped penetrating oil onto the needle/axle interface and let it sit for a few mins.  I used the fork method but was concerned about the lower portion of the fork pressing down on the painted face.  I put a Popsicle stick under the bottom edge of the fork to protect the painted area.  Mind you I was wanting to reuse these gauge face plates in my case.

I have not put anything back together yet.  In another post I had asked for recommendations relative to cleaning and painting the removed gauge face plates with say a flat clear paint to kind of blend the various shinny or oxidized areas on the gauge face to be more uniform.  I got a recommendation from a member for a flat clear paint used for models, hobby store again.

Again I think my case is a little more unique in that I purchased "used" gauges that had face plates in much better condition then my own and I am swapping them!

re: prying off needle with a dinner fork. Put the curve of the fork on the head of the face plate screw, and it will pry right off without touching the faceplate.

The popsickle stick is a good idea too.

Your best bet, as far as I know, is keep your eyes on eBay. If I'm wrong someone please speak up.
