There is a guy that purchased a bunch of calipers from "Big Bob" in the for sale section. You might look through that thread and see if they want to pass on the great deal they got. "Big Bob" was slowly destroying parts  ??? and this guy bought them out of, umm respect for useful vintage Honda parts. I wanted some other parts from this guy, but he destroyed them before I could get them.  ??? :o

Here's the thread: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=78481.25
They might all be fronts, dunno.

No luck.

Thanks tho. :)

Anyone know how different the foot controls are on a 76 vs 77-78?  I'm looking at this Rearset kit for a 76 and wondering if it will work for my 77. http://www.fastfromthepast.com/servlet/the-389/Rearsets-Folding-Knurled-Footpegs/Detail

Any input?

Doubt it. THe 77-78 are totally different with the huge aluminum piece. The 75-76 did not have that.

The original foot controls on the 77-78 sit on an aluminum piece that ffjmoore was talking about. Those aluminum brackets also hold the passenger foot pegs, and they are massive. The swing arm bolt goes through those aluminum pieces, so if you use rearsets from an earlier model you will have to modify your swing arm bolt to be shorter to make up for the missing aluminum brackets. There might be some more mods needed to get them to work, but I'm not sure. I had to shorten the swing arm bolt on my 78F because of this.

I need to get next to a 75-76 to see what it is like.

Shortening the swingarm bolt is nothing major if that is all that has to happen.  I had always figured on just making spacers and retaining the length of the swingarm bolt, but it may well end up in the way like that.

The 75-76 has a rear hoop that holds the passenger peg and a different aluminum bracket. It looks like the brake side uses those bolts for the rearset your looking at. Not compatible. Thats why you dont see any late 750f with bolt on rearset kits.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, '77 & '78 F's are the bastard child of the CB world. I looked at several possible mods to make the '76 rear sets work and didn't like any of them. The swing arm bolt from the earlier models (with the zerks in the ends) are shorter and even though they require work to use them properly I'm going that route and making a plate so I can adapt a set off a 600RR.

Everytime I comment about having trouble finding parts for my bike, people say, "It is a CB750, everyone and their brother has those, parts are easy to find!".  Then I have to point out that mine is a 750F, only made in 77-78 and enough things are different that it is in fact difficult for me.

The '75 & 76's are not too bad but yes '77 & '78 are a challenge. I have never worried about someone coming up to me and saying "why did you cut the frame up on that great '77 F".

Hi... I've managed to get an original exhaust system for my 750F1. Does anyone have any ideas about separating the silencer from the header pipes? Looking at some repair work and rechroming... I'm trying to be non destructive to both parts... at the moment! Also trying to locate an exhaust seal between the silencer and the collector box...?

Unless I misunderstand what your trying to do, just remove the two bolts from the clamp and wiggle. Mine moved when I took the clamp off but eventually it came out. I thought I had seen recently a place selling the gasket that goes between these two pieces but I haven't had any luck finding that place today, anyone else?

I'd check with your local Honda dealer for that seal or seeing as you're in the UK, David Silver Spares.

I'm a newbie here and glad to see this CBF thread.  I really appreciate the amount of information and support I've realized already.  I can only hope that I can contribute in some way.

I purchased this 76 F1 about 3 moths ago and drove it home in sub freezing (and snow) temps.  Been many years since I've been on a bike but I've quickly fallen in love with this project and all that is SOHC Honda.  This bike and I are going to have a looooooooooooong love affair. My build might go pretty slow compared to most as I've got much on my plate.  It's my therapy and I get MUCH enjoyment out of this and reading this forum.

My goal is a mild cafe which I will DRIVE, DRIVE, DRIVE so reliability is the goal. Just installed the PAMCO ignition which was a breeze and ready to start on the forks.  I haven't hit any major obstacles until the carb rebuild.  All was well until I tried to remove the needle from it's keeper in the slider. The two cross heads retaining the keeper weren't budging.  Soaked them for two days in PB and stripped the heads of each in the first slider.  The other three sliders are soaking in acetone and ATF until next week.  I drilled out the the screws and will be oversizing them to reinstall on the first slider.  I'm now fighting the front MC clearance with drag bars but just ordered one inch risers to get a better brake lever angle.  I also ordered my very own impact driver in anticipation of removing the case covers.

I think I'm changing my user name to "SOHCJunkie". Life is good.

Hi - thanks for replies about splitting my silencer from collector box. The pictures I posted were when I got the exhaust. I've since removed the clamping collar, but there isn't any movement between the 2 parts - wondering if there's a corrosion build up between the collector box stub and the bore of the silencer? I'm also needing to rebuild the baffle - I think I've got a plan for this... please can anyone post any close up photos looking at the back of the muffler, so I can see what it should look like when I've finnished? David Silver lists the seal as discontinued...I have found a plce that has those sort of seals (closest size is 60mm bore x 68mm OD - just need to work out if I can make use of that by boring out to 63.5mm - wall thicknes getting down though...). Anyway will post my results!

Keep the faith, boys and girls...and don't trash your Fs just because they're Fs. Solid machine...if you have the patience for it :)

Don't forget that any part can be custom made. As TwoTired keeps saying, just wait until you have to rebuild an Avco-Lycoming IO-360 aircraft engine and spend $20k on parts alone. These machines are cheap to make custom parts for!

I am wondering this same thing.  I seem to remember the bolt has a round head hard to get at and the nut is welded to the collar.  Last time I looked at it I thought how the hell am I going to get this off?

My clamp had only one bolt and was leaking at that connection also, so it came off pretty easy. The baffle on mine was a completely different setup and wound up getting removed with a hacksaw.

Wohali ~ Just to be clear, I'd never condone the "modification" of a well preserved F. Chances are the "barn find" that had been getting crapped on and rusted out would be more likely to become the custom job then say a '72.

I just saw that too but to me it seemed he was peddling a bunch of junk not even worth the cost of shipping and using the threat of destruction to get people to jump.  Or maybe my standards are too high. ;D ;D ;D

Holy crap Gearhead, that's nice and I'd drive all the way out there for it. You should see some of the crap that floats around these parts for that kind of price.

As for the "Big Bob" thread, I've picked up some of those items and while I cringe at what he's done to some of them he's been flexible with me on price and ships quick. I got a nice set of comstars, and a pile of different engine covers for far cheaper than what some of the psychos on e-gay are asking. Personally whatever I didn't sell I'd put a free ad on craigslist saying you'd have to take it all, pile it in the driveway and close the door.

Damn if I wasn't elbow deep in my current 77 750F I'd be very very tempted to go get that thing.  I've been looking for an excuse to head up to New England lately.
