Possible new "product" for you cafe' riders...
« on: July 14, 2009, 06:58:40 AM »
I have some brass rod that is the right size to make an O-ring sealed "plug" that looks like the end of the starter for the CB750 engines. I could make a double O-ring seal that you could bolt from the alternator side, pulling up against the engine case from the starter's cave side.

Is there enough interest to bother?

I'd be interested. :)

The button broke on my 750 several years ago and I haven't used the electric start since.  Might as well get that extra weight off of there.

You talking about a starter motor blanking off plug Mark? I an alloy made one for a 750 engine for a chopper guy once, and tapped and threaded for a short 8mm mushroom head allen screw and a big washer, then used a flat rubber washer to seal between the washer and the plug/case, it looked very decorative and sealed the hole as tight as a drum! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

That's the general idea. I'm thinking of a flanged one, where the flange is on the starter side, and a big bolt and washer in the middle to pull it up to the case from the alternator side. And some O-rings in grooves, so it looks Japanese.  ;D

I got one from someone on the chopper board a while back and it had the added advantage of a little milled L-block so you can still bolt the starter cover down.  Don't forget the starter cover bolts to the starter, so when you remove it you need another provision for the cover or else you'll get that starter cavity full or crap.

I make them from aluminium with a O-ring or (in my replica) just glue them in. Never a problem.  But there are more than one way of doing it. Keep up the good work, Mark.

Cheers, Rob
Better sorry for failing then for the lack of trying.

I made mine similar to your idea with flanged aluminium bush, flange on the inside, with shaped aluminium washer on the outside.  Bolt through the middle, close tolerance bush sealed with 3 bond.  o-rings would be more professional though.  And metal bracket on inside from head of bolt upwards with anchornut for top starter cover.

Well, it sounds like 754 and CycleX both make ones that someone could buy: I think they have it covered, then. (I'll go make something else out of this nice bronze, instead.  :D ).

OK, I'll send you one in time for your next riding season (how's that?).  ;D
You'll have to use it indoors: I don't have the $$ right now to get the ultra-brite LEDs for them. It only works like in a garage, not easy to see outside, with the LEDs I have.

You want me to send you some money up front mate, so you can get some of them fancy bright LED's? I'm happy to, just PM me and let me know how much, ok? ;D

We have made 30 mm and 40 mm for as long as I can remember. What size is the Honda/
