Is this a Euro thing or??
« on: November 28, 2005, 07:50:09 AM »
I have noticed that whilst on the European mainland that riders thank people(mainly car drivers!) by sticking their leg out, rather than taking your hand off of the bars! Does anyone else do this, I think it is a great idea, but I do not see anyone in the UK doing it.
Jim.

In Canada we just stick out our tongues. Hard to see w a full-face helmet on though ;D

Are you taking the p*ss Jim?  I've never seen anyone "salute" with their leg!  Maybe they had you spotted as a Brit and were "farting in your general direction" - sorry too much Python on this site.

When I was in France last year, I posted (on the old site) about the lack of sohcs over there. Never saw one in two weeks in the Dordogne. Perfect biking country, brilliant roads and loads of bikes.

I was being serious, how stupid of me!  :)
When I was in Italy, I saw the bikers do this, when I had moved over to let them pass. I think I have also seen it done in other countries?

;D Are you sure they wern't aimin for your wing mirror in an attempt to knock it off if you didn't move over  :D

I've got to admit though, you don't see as many "nodders" as you used to.

Indeed.  I spent a week in 2004 around the French Alps.  Sure wish I'd had a bike.  Johnny Verhoeven, a long-time member from Belgium and organizer of the first Western European Ride has plans for a commemorative 10 year anniversary ride in 2007.  The actual route is still being worked out, but early thinking was down the French Alps to Provence and then across the Pyranees to return to Belgium via the French coast.  There are two of us from the US, me and Bruce Giller, kicking around the idea of attending the ride.  Unfortunately, the expense of shipping my 750 over for a week or two of riding is kind of crazy, so I'll probably end up being on a rental.

As I learn more, I'll be sure that news spreads to this site.  Johnny and Bruce mostly hang on the SOHC/4 mailing list.

John,
I noticed that, I often nod and get ignored, so i am tempted not to bother anymore!

Glenn - there is a great article in this month's Classic & Motorcycle Mechanics (Dec05 issue) about renting classic bikes in the Dordogne. They have GS1000, GPZ750, VF750, CB900 etc

I am very aware of giving " the sign" to other bikers as I pass them.

I usually do the left hand down , as that is what is common around here ,
if Not able to , i usually kick out the left leg...

Cars that get in my way get the one finger salute... ;D

Ah, one person who knows about the 'leg' thing!
That Dordogne bike rental looks great, I am not sure the wife would like it though!  >:(

I've seen it on the racetrack.  I vintage race and during the cooldown lap it is customary to wave to the corner workers as a show of thanks as they are all volunteers.  Sometimes it's not convenient to take a hand off the bars so often a leg is stuck out.

Noooo, never give up the nodding! Where would we be then?
There's still an unwritten alliance between bikers I think. I've had smiles and plenty of "how's it going" just walking through town with my lid and spotting another person doing the same.

Also, I've broken down before now and the very next biker who passed me stopped and helped out, tried to fix my problems and let my use his moby to phone for help.

Most bikers are " biker - friendly" to each other , no matter what style or brand , EXCEPT for most
HD riders. I know because I deal with them on a daily basis. In their minds , if you don't ride a HD , you aren't
worth their time..

I give a "kick-out" to ANY biker I pass, thats just how I was taught...

Interestingly, all summer got some form of acknowledgement from virtually all bikers passing even HD's and crotch rockets. The most frequent exceptions were those on fully loaded Wings. Go figure.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

This is standard practice where I'm from too.  I'll get waves from almost any rider (unfotunately some HD riders don't) when out on my bike.  It's quite nice.
