Phranc - 74 cb750
« on: July 18, 2009, 09:33:06 PM »
So I suppose I should start to chronicle the progress of this bike... The story goes that my first bike was a 73 cb350four.  I loved that bike, but always wanted something a little bigger and thought that the 750 would be the next step.  Fast forward 15 years (oh!), one other bike in between, and viola... Phranc appears on the scene.  I've been back in Oregon for nearly five years now and friends here ride, conveniently enough, Honda cbs... I'm done with school and don't have immediate plans to hop on a boat anytime soon, and have just washed a man out of my hair... Phranc has very good timing.

Here is a the one and only before shot.  Starkmojo picked the bike up for parts and found that low and behold it has compression... http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=51874.msg558960#msg558960  This is the friend who helped Mojo move the bike to his place... haven't met her yet, but can't help but like her truck!

What an ugly bike. No hope for it, Carrie. You should just throw it away.
No.

So, then I pick up the bike from Mojo and promptly deliver it into Mark Linder's capable hands...  the tank, the seat, and the carbs come off right away.

My brother paints the tank and aftermarket side covers,

I clean the carbs

and Emmet Otter gets ready to ride...

So yesterday the carbs went back on along with a new rear wheel and shocks.  Photobucket doesn't do good close ups, so let's try it again.

It worked out really well- saved a 750 from the boneyard, got coldright on the road, used the money from selling it to buy my son a cl175- a win win win situation!

Wow!  What a great day... I went to the shop expecting to get some work done, but I wasn't expecting her to run, much less ride... I wore sandles :(  so Mark had all the fun.
Today the exhaust got bolted in, the new plugs went in, I put new gas lines on, we put new bullet rear lights on, rebuilt the exhaust mount, changed the oil and filter... and so on.  Put some gas in the tank, cranked the engine for awhile to circulate oil and kabamb... a few kick starts later, she ran.  Mark tinkered around figuring out the apparent exhaust leak and after he got everything tightened down, he drove around the parking lot like a mad man...

I can't believe how happy it makes me that this bike which was about to get parted out now runs like a champ!

Post Script: Yesterday Jon and Mark helped me get the new rear tire, shocks, and chain on.  We changed out the air filter, put the carbs back on, etc, etc... If there is anything I left out, I'm sure that someone will remind me... Thanks EVERYONE for having in hand in this... the List includes Starkmojo aka Duncan for salvaging the bike, my little brother and painter extraordinaire Traven for the fabulous paint job, Mark Linder for all the hard work and patience, Jon for all his hard work and being such a good sport, Paulages for having such a fab place to work on bikes, Doc Brown for being such an amazing guy and having the best damn motorcycle shop in Portland.  Oh, and Emmet for being such a good dog.

Yeah, I prolly would have done the same thing when I was a teenager.  Now I'm a trauma nurse and have too many visions in my head.  Looking forward to riding on Tuesday night... oh man, that's gonna feel good.

Once they're done, long as you don't touch the carbs, they stay in synch for pretty much ever.
I think we'll be doing yours next Saturday morning before your ride.
Kit said she'd bring her morgan carb tune.

thanks for reminding me! yeah, I'll bring that puppy by.  I might need to run the syncer on the carbs anyway to make sure they're still in sync.  Dunno that I tightened the locknuts down well enough.
I never did get my hands on a bottle for the carb syncing.  In all honest geekiness, having found those MASH vodka IV bottles for $5 on ebay, they with some tubing and an on/off valve are actually cheaper than the motionpro fuel bottles.  How sick is that?

It's gonna be a chick bike party on Sat morning.  ;D The nice thing is, the sync is fast and easy with one of these tuners. Well worth the price.

As for tubing on the bottle, that shouldn't be hard to come by.

OH YES! Albumin bottles would be great.  Maybe not the IV tubing though, might not handle gas too well.

Yeah, Mark needs to check my carbs too because watching me sync my carbs is like watching an arthritic midget push a boulder up a hill.
