When Riding Is Not Fun and You're Being Stalked
« on: July 19, 2009, 11:31:49 AM »
Yesterday afternoon/evening I had a situation come up that I'm still not comfortable with. Today after thinking about it, I am furious and want to take some action.

About 6 PM yesterday (Saturday) I left my house on the ST and headed up Hwy 28 to Mountain Rest and was then going back roads to Long Creek to pick-up barbeque for our dinner.  I was on a long 10 or 12 mile road with almost no traffic - ever. This was a county road with very few houses. I came up on a 90's model Red Chevrolet pick-up driving in the same direction at speeds of 45-55, not erratic or anything that concerned me. The driver was a white male in his mid 30's I'd say, long hair, no shirt, left window rolled down. When I came to a long straight, I dropped 1 gear and went around. I glanced at my mirrors before returning to my lane and at 70 or so -he was closing fast - "what the he11?" I sped up to 80 and pushed my normal speeds through the next several curves. This is an area full of deer and I was traveling at speeds much more than I'm comfortable with. The pavement is not really asphalt, but more like smooth rocks/stones embedded In asphalt - the stuff that gets really slick at the slightest hint of rain. There was nowhere to pull off and I kept thinking to myself that I was going to get hurt driving as fast as I was.. I saw an on-coming car and decided then to slow and wave. Keeping him in my mirrors to make sure he was going to slow too once he caught up, I tooted my horn twice and raised my hand as a friendly wave at the next several houses - giving the impression that I knew these people. Something worked. The guy slowed down and kept his distance and at the next intersection used his right blinker - you guessed I damn sure made a left.

I just wished there had been a trooper or sheriff anywhere on that road. I have never been harassed like that before and the thought of mixing it up with a truck vs. motorcycle was not fun. I never got his tag since while behind him - he was normal. I darn sure wasn't going to provoke him and U-turn to follow him for a tag number.

Have you ever had this happen? What was the right thing to do? I don't normally carry a gun, but having one yesterday would not have helped - both hands were busy driving away from this moron.

I thought about going back that route today in my truck and make that right turn he did - in hopes I could see that same Red pick-up and make a formal complaint to the SHP. There was nothing special about the truck and at the time, I wasn't paying a lot of attention to it, so recognizing that exact one would be difficult, but finding it would be like a needle in a haystack - who knows, he could live down a dirt road, park behind the house, or could have borrowed the vehicle. I decided to get out and ride again today and enjoy the scenery and no let this consume me.

Best Regards,
Gordon

Scary stuff Gordon, but not worth dwelling on as it'll eat away at you. Find a differnt road for a ride for a while and forget it ever happened.

I've had this happen in the UK with some nutter in a car following my car but not on a bike. It's easier I guess to lose people in the UK - I normally wait for a roundabout and then pull out before another car from one of the other roads so I know the car behind can't follow me. There are some real aggressive and unhinged people behind the wheel these days and it might just be me, but I think it's getting worse out there...

You used your head Gordon, good thinking.

LMP is right, I believe it may well be getting a little "testy" out there!

Ride aware, it's good for you.  ;D

I think you did the right thing.  Some folks just take it as an insult to be passed.  They want to show you that they can go fast too.  I doubt anything would have come of it, he just wanted to show you his bullocks, and let you know that he was a man about town, a bad ass as it were.

Like I said, I think you handled it well.

Glad to hear you're alright Gordon. Look at it this way, some guys just have to break out the ruler....if you know what I mean.

I'm considering installing four-way strobe flashers on my bikes for rain use, maybe something like that would be a good deterrent once the situation has arisen?

My brother had the same thing happen once, I followed behind on my 500 close enough to get a license number but eventually the guy backed off and we stopped in the next town. Last week I stopped at a four way stop and I gave the right of way to the other guy, he waved a beer at me and yelled something. At the next stop he spun his tires, went right spun around and came back toward me. I drove straight and never saw him again. There are some wierd people out there. ::)

Gordon, glad you are alright, hopefully this clown was wanting a better look see at your bike,I try and see some good but in the same breath he was pushing you to some pretty uncomfotable speeds on some questionable roads. If you guys do have the ccw,you better be prepared to use it and have the answers for the law when they come calling, and have some common sense to seek counceling when you do. Beleive me its not  an easy thing to cope with.

This summer I had some guy in a minivan cross three, almost four, lanes of traffic and almost sideswipe me, the only reason he didn't was because I honked. So I punched it and flipped him off as I passed (probably not the best decision). He pulled up next to me at the next light and proceeded to yell at me "watch who you're flipping off punk!" and "you need to learn some respect for your elders" and so on, to which I replied "Screw you, you almost sideswiped me. I could have died because of you back there". His response to that? "I didn't see you"... Didn't see me, had my headlight on and wasn't obstructed by any sort of objects, how could he not see me? Several times during the altercation he began to step out of the car. I had my kick stand down, leather jacket, helmet, armored gloves... I think he knew that I probably had the upper hand in a hand to hand fight so he never tried anything. Couldn't believe how irate he got when he was entirely at fault for the entire situation...

This is just ONE of the scary motorcycling stories I've got, another one involves me having to kick this woman's door as she intentionally tried to sideswipe me at about fifty mph. Some crazy, crazy people out there, stay on your toes and try not to anger people.

Who knows what triggers road rage?  And, why couldn't a noisy bike be one of them, particularly while having a phone conversation on an otherwise quiet highway?

Just speculation.  But, some people ask for trouble in ways they never even considered.  It's why police interview BOTH parties when an incident occurs.  We've only gotten one side of the incident.  (Just an objective observation.)

I've been chased before, too.  I've also retaliated aggressively in younger days when I was still invincible/stupid, and felt I was wronged.

In general, it ain't no fun.  'Till you can tell the stories over a pint much later.

I applaud you for using your head and skill in an otherwise frightening situation. I am fortunate to have not had any such thing happen to me, but if I ever do I sincerely hope I can use the same wise judgement.

I too have a ccw permit, but there are two situations (ok, pretty much every situation) where I would not want to have to use it, domestic violence, and a traffic situation. Both of those are where otherwise perfectly sane people do some insane stuff and it can be hard to tell who the bad guy is. As gratifying as it would seem to be to show the other person how wrong they were, I hope I would consider the legal ramifications and swallow my pride and just move forward. I'm not jumping on anyone here, as I believe the members here are intelligent people and we all say what we wish we could do, but at the end of the day know we shouldn't. Sorry, stepping off soap box.

This is just a good reminder of why we need to stay sharp and keep our skills up. Again OP, good job!

You experienced a hater, lowlife and where I live it's happened a few times.  I'm a revenge type guy but I have mostly had this stuff happen on the interstate, etc.  Both hands on the bars and all you can do is use your acceleration to get away.  I'd probably return to that road the next day, same time and stand on the side of the road with a brick but that's silly, stupid me.

Guys, as for noise - this is a new Honda ST1300 which is probably one of the quietest bikes made. It makes no more noise than a Honda Accord - completely stock. I just never want to see this ass again. Maybe he was drunk, high - who knows.

Thanks for the inputs and sharing. You never know when something like this will happen, but know this - that truck weighs 5,000 lbs - me less than 1,000 and only 2 wheels. You can't win a gun fight with a small stick!

I am having trouble deciding if it was stalking or just paranoia?

The guy in the truck, may have just taken being passed as an invitation to race.

Some of us tend to push our cars and trucks very hard, on familiar twisty roads near home.

Ask my buddy with the hopped up Kawi, He said,
"I thought I was taking that corner at pretty good speed (he was), till I noticed your Taurus, right behind me :o"

Course he knew I was behind him, just assumed he would lose me in the corner..
