Funny...
« on: July 17, 2009, 06:12:35 PM »
People in my area cant understand why I have put over 1,000 miles in the last month on my 750 and about 20 miles on my 2006 Vulcan. It's hard to explain, my vulcan is smoother, more comfortable, not as fast though, but there's a vibe with these old Honda's that just does it for me.

A couple pics from last night's ride. The bike now has new front gators and rear shocks.

So what is it about these bikes that draws you to them?

I know how you feel. There is just something bout those inline 4's that just sparks something in the owner. I can't tell you what it is, what ever it is makes me spend time and money I don't have fixing mine up. Even when I should have given up.

Agreed, I have a 2009 Ducati Monster 696, and I only ride the Duc when the Honda is "under construction".

If you have to explain... they wouldn't understand.

Hey Johnny5, I found one of those exhaust tips at PEP Boys in southern New Hampshire, just in case anyone asks...

I'm with ya.  My buddy has an ST1300 which is smooth as silk, power from hell, handles like a dream and I loved riding it.  My K6 is just home to me.

I may "supplement" the fleet at some point with something more modern but I'll never be without a 7 fitty.  The human experience is quite complex and I think it's really difficult to chart, measure or test to the point where you can figure out what trips your trigger (as a human).

These ole doggies have something really special going for them.  I think a piece of it may be their history... how they forged a new experience in riding and ownership.

It's also important to me that they're "understandable"  (I may not be able to diagnose a problem as easily on a newer bike).

Another thing is that there are many avid owners (support group - SOHC4.net) to help when necessary.  These folks are worthy of a ton of respect with these bikes and in life.

I tip my hat to the 7 fitty... and as previously alluded to, "if you needs to explains it, they ain't gonna get it".  On top of that, analyzing feelings, relationships or nearly anything related to human behavior is "analytical" which by definition is sort of destructive.... so just forget everything I just said :)

What that means to me: they all speak to us in their own way I guess.  These old bikes are the gravelly-voiced elders, and the crotch rockets are their loudmouth kids.  In a good way.  I had a dream that a row of 750s was watching a Superbike race, talking amongst themselves and cheering on the kids, like Cars. With Bikes.

I'm in the same camp :D I've got a 2005 Yamaha Vstar 1100 classic, fantastic motorcycle, but I find myself riding my 750's more and leaving the Vstar sitting. It's funny how that works!!

My 750 actually sounds like a motor, not a high power kazoo. It has class and charm, and just about everywhere I go there is someone who has memories of their old 750. It does everything I need it to do, just not as well as a new bike.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

I think a lot is said for the general maintenance of these bikes. Doing the valves, cam chain, timing, carbs, ect, that make it feel like it's more yours. With my Vulcan, I wouldnt have a clue on how to adjust the valves, let alone, pop the tank off like I do with the CB in about 5 seconds.

You may have hit on it. They are the every mans/womens bike and can be tricked out over a few weekends rather cheaply and turn out some thing that looks sooo cool and yet different.. Maybe..

The best part of this video is where the guy asks you to shut your eyes and listen to the bike start up.  Sounds like a 100k sport/race car.

I would think that well sorted CB750 is about 9 times more fun then Vulcan of any kind. And looks 18 times better.

What is funny is how at the end of the video, they are saying the 750 was boring to ride because it works too well.  Of course now on this site, most will say the 750 is more fun to ride compared to modern bikes because the new ones are too good.

I agree, a few years back I had a 72 CB750 and a 80 VT750 and I almost never rode the VT750. I just find the CB750 More fun to ride.. call me crazy but..

Don't know what displacement your Vulcan is, but almost any mid sized cruiser is boring as hell, so your statement is not remarkable.

Now go spend and afternoon on a 2006 GSXR or R1. Now can you make the same statement?

In 1974 I pulled up my Buddy's driveway on my K2. His sister asked me how "did it ride?" I replied, "LIKE A DREAM."

I finally got my F1 back on the road after months of work, and you can practically see people's jaws drop when I fire it up (kick start, too!) Lots of 'em want to know what it is, where it came from, etc., like it was from outer space or something. The old timers try to guess the year. It is pretty amusing. Drive on, like Johnny Cash said.

Feels like a sleeper, if I knew what it was to have one. I feel good; you gotta hold onto this when it comes to you! Hopefully there are years of this ahead.
