Topic: I did it again. 77 550F Supersport

A bike popped up local so i bought it. 1977 550 supersport. A little rusty on the outside. Been sitting for 13 years. the tank has 1 small dent and is the cleanest tank inside i have ever seen. Not a spec of rust. Guy said his brother parked it because some spring in the ignition thingy need to be fixed. My guess is the advancer spring. 20,000+ miles. And it came with a title. It would be so easy to part this thing out and make a bunch of money. So many people are looking for a titled frame. But dont bother asking. Im going to fix it up get it back on the road. This one is too nice to part out. So if anybody has a timing plate they would like to donate to keep a bike alive let me know. I really would like to build a hard tail but this bike is to nice stock to chop it up.

Hmmm, I don't have a maroon one.... Pity you don't have the matching side covers.

Find out if the advancer is just stuck.  That seems more likely than a broken spring.
But, if you need a spring I've got a spare you can have.

I you like loud pipes, you'll hate that muffler.  But, you can ride all day with little fatigue.

I have a luggage rack, back rest just like that one.  Wife loves the back rest.

I think the 77 CB550F was best of breed.  It does so many things well.

i pulled the advancer off. i have never pulled one off before so i dont know what i was looking for but. the springs were there and when i pushed the lever thing the arms moved away so it seems like its not the advancer. Maybe the condensor went bad. Ill get around to firing it up as soon as i can. The carbs need to be cleaned. they are locked. What in the points area would cause the bike to suddenly stop working and need to be replaced? Thats what i need to find out. Twotired maybe ill ride it over when i get it running. Ill let you take it for a spin so you can see how the maroon one feels. And your right. Quite pipes hurt my ears. I think ill take a chop saw to the exhaust just above the muffler. Just kidding. For once i have the desire to restore a bike to stock. Crazy Oh and those are the stock side covers. The inside is a purpleish maroon. He painted them black.

FJ,  Pm me with what you need for your 550.  I've got lots of bits for that very bike.  Not too many of them are shiny, though.  I even have a spare block with crank if you need it.  You might have to clean it up a bit as it has been a bit moist.  I do have an advance mechanism if you need one.

I think im going to pull the points plate and put it on my 76 550 to verify that is the problem. Then i will let you know.

The carbs need to be cleaned. they are locked.

Use a heat gun on the carb bodies around the slides.

What in the points area would cause the bike to suddenly stop working and need to be replaced? Thats what i need to find out.

The points just provide ground contact for the coils.  Prevent the ground or make it ground all the time are points compartment failure modes.  The Condensers can short, open or change value.  I think that's about it.

Quite pipes bother you?  No problemo.  That's a >quiet< pipe, so you should be fine.

Bring it by.  I'll make a hit list of all the things you still need to fix. 

It should help you with your modified 550s.  Having one that runs well, is a good benchmark to find out if your mods are actually an improvement, or just a change.

i have done that to get the slides out but after 13 years of sitting is it worth trying without taking them off the bike? Nah, as im typing this i realize im going to pull the carbs and clean them no mater what. So i may as well start there.
