Need photos of your 550F rear sets.. opinions, ideas..
« on: July 16, 2009, 08:17:27 AM »
I am looking to rig my '76 550F with rear sets without dropping $275+ on a new bolt on set.  I've researched on here and have gathered that people have used sets off different bikes with mods to get rearsets.  I am trying to do something similar.  I run a MAC 4-into-1 exhaust, I am not sure if that will get in the way.  Below are some pix.

I would really appreciate if a couple people could post some close up photos of other 550F's that have been rigged with rear sets and what people used.  Please look at the pix below and give me any ideas, opinions.  Where exactly on the bike will be best to mount the rear sets.  I am not a machinist, altho I could probably have someone weld some parts on the bike if was necessary.

Also, am I going to run into problems with the kick start?

In theory, I should be able to get just about any set off any bike and as long as I had a way of mounting and didnt get in the way of the kickstart or exhaust, they should work?  Is this where having a mounting plate comes into play.  Would allow me to drill holes in the plate exactly where I need them to line up with existing mounting points on frame and then mount the sets to the plate?

Thanks ya'll

- Joel

There are some decent shots of Donald's rearsets in this thread:

I'm gonna try and rig it up to my CB550F.  Maybe someone who has machined rear sets from scratch can help direct me.  Like I said before, I am limited to what I can do.  I can cut and drill holes and bend thinner metal, but thats about it. Would I be able to come up with some sort of 1/4" steel plate to mount to the frame, then fasten another bracket to that plate with a hole for the footpeg to mount to.  The shifter would swivel on the same pole that the foot peg is on.

I am trying to think thru this still...and comprehend the technology...  so I am thinking out loud to try and get some ideas from others who have made sets before.

That is essentially what I did, but I used aluminum because it can be cut on a bandsaw, filed and drilled much easier than steel. The biggest pain in the arse, was making longer swingarm and engine mounting bolts to accommodate the plates. You might also consider welding tabs on the frame to mount too.

So the two places where you are mount are the Swingarm mount and the enging mount that the old footpeg was mounted to.  How did you go about getting a longer bolt?

Joel

I used some steel metric shafting and threaded the ends to accept nuts.
To prevent rust, I had to have them cadium plated.
A bigger PITA and a lot more expensive than loading your bike in the truck, if you ask me.

What about drilling a hole right below the swingarm mount since the frame is flat there?   Or do you think that will rob from structural integrity?

I don’t profess to be an engineer and wouldn’t want to speculate on the structural effect of drilling additional holes in your frame.
That being said, I have seen several examples of it being done. Cruise the Projects Forum for ideas.

What about how the shifter pedal needs to be able to rotate.  Whats your recommendation for the best way to mount the shifter pedal and footpeg.  I'd like them mounted on the same pole/bolt.

I don’t have a lot of pictures of the parts separate, but you might be able to see that the pedal pivots on the foot peg. I made up Delrin (Dupont) bushings that slide on a reduced diameter section of the foot peg. You can also purchase some universal rear-sets that have all the foot pegs and pedals ready to go.

Good Luck

It looks like you removed the kick starter.  I am assuming that it doesn't clear, is that right?

I am looking at rear set options, but I only have a kick starter.  I have to say though, that the stock pegs don't feel that bad to me.

Yamaha FZR600 rearsets bolted to pieces of mild steel angle iron which was welded directly to the frame.  Brake side modded by welding a piece of strap steel to the back tab on the brake pedal (the portion that normally bolts to the mastercylinder pushrod).  Brake actuating rod flipped 180 degrees and rod shortened.  Shifter side just needed the rod shortened as the FZR shifter bung fits the Honda shift shaft.

Kick starter is deleted (bump start only), but the pegs are foldable, so if you fabricated some sort of a holder for the peg, the kickstarter might still clear.

you could do something similar to this, i made these for my 750 (basically just copied the dunstall design) no welding required

How did you guys decide where to position the rear sets...  did you just sit on the bike and position your legs where felt natural or is there a more set rule for placement...

As a rule, possision the pegs directly under your bum.
That is a natural feeling location and your legs will have the stength to stand off the seat.
You should be able to raise yourself off the seat and hang from side to side without difficulty.

I've scalped several dozens of rearset pics off the forum and keep them on my workshop laptop for reference.  If I wasn't at work I would add them to the thread & give credit where it is due...  The most ingenious is the guy who uses headsets from mountain bikes...  Scroll through the project thread and you should come across plenty of pics for reference.  I'm waiting 'til the seat's done on my 550 before I build my rearsets.

For home fab (ha!!! better than most tool crib's work) I think FJ's are the nicest ever!

The more I see your nice work, the more I want to have someone machine the exact pieces I need..

That ^^^^would likely set you back much more than buying some Raask's from Omar's!
Good luck!

Look up a pic of 2001, 2002, cbr600f4i rear sets, thats what I will be using. They are very nice, still have the rubber for comfort and cheap on ebay.
