Hard time rolling when out of gear?
« on: July 14, 2009, 08:40:57 PM »
got on the bike today and right out of the gate the bike was hard to push around. ( it does move, just markedly harder than the last time I was on her)
I am still just riding the bike up and down the alley getting the feel for things, so usually only get to 2nd gear, 3rd at the most... and I end up having to do like a K turn at each end.....
the bike is equally hard to push in neutral as it is with the clutch lever pulled while in gear ( if that makes a difference).

the first thing that I am going to check out is the brakes....
just wanted to see if there is anywhere else I should be looking?

I have a 78 750F with the stock disk brake.

thx!!

Yup.  Sounds like a binding brake to me.

Give the front two calipers and the rear caliper a belt with a rubber mallet - then try and roll it..

You can give them a good hard hit with the rubber mallet - you won't hurt them... if it rolls easier now - you know you have binding brakes

to find out which one - apply the rear brake a few times - then release then try and push - if thats OK then apply the front brake - release and try and push - you'll soon know which ones are not working properly..

How tight is your chain and have you greased it recently?
Don't grease it if it is an "O" ring chain though.

ride it around the block (or up and down you alley a couple of times) and only use the rear brake to stop the bike.  Then "carefully" touch the front brake rotors one at a time and see if they are extremely hot.  The hot rotors mean that the brakes are dragging and you can also tell if it's one or both.

They can get hot enough to burn your fingers though, so be careful or wear gloves.

I didnt get to check it out today, but I checked the front break when I first noticed it, and it seems good, i wasnt sure how to check the back brake since i dont know how free it should feel being connected to the chain and all.

but I will go at and give the back caliper a good tap, and see if there is any change....
I have not oiled the chain since I got it in may. I will check that out too.

If the rear brake is binding enough to make it difficult to push the bike in neutral, you will barely be able to turn the wheel by hand when you put the bike on the center stand.  It should turn freely with multiple revolutions from one good spin if the brake is not binding.

Blocked fluid return hole ( the teeny one ) in the rear, or front, or both master cylinders.....
Lots of posts on this prob/solution...do a 'sticking brakes ' search....
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

so i took the back caliper off, and sure enough the wheel freed up.
cleaned everything and put it back together, now the brake fluid wont pass through the hose. when I push the brake I can hear air being sucked in somewhere....

I used the brake to pump out the piston so it was at least working that well before i took everything together?

is this a bleeding thing?
do I need some sort of suction to get the air out and the fluid in?

thanks

No you need tons of patience, pump pump pump, leave pump pump pump leave etc repeat 300 times until the "microbubbles" have finally got out of the system, known problem for our old bikes when you do the brakes at either end.

Simple, rebuild ,clean whatever, fill reservoir to proper level ,tighten cap, turn so facing where line bolts up,slowly very slowly pull lever,if fluid appears, great, install,if not pour tiny bit of fluid in hole ,slowly pump, air will start to purge itself in a pump or3,if correct fluid will start to flow, install, saves lots of time and pumps!Bill
