What's this chain protector thing?
« on: July 21, 2009, 01:47:34 PM »
Can someone please tell me the dimensions of item 3 in the picture. I need the diameter but more importantly the length. And what's it made out of. When I removed my sprocket cover I see I do have the case protector on my 71 CB750 but I didn't see this thing go rolling around on the floor. I assume I have to make a replacement if I knew the dimensions and material.

If I remember right doesn't 3 go inside of 1 on a rod?

Could be totally wrong.

It is rubber and fits over a shaft on item 1. Look and it might be there. Dan

Yup.  It's also one of those "optional" parts.  If you don't have it and your chain becomes horribly loose, the chain will eat #1.

So does that mean it fits over the extrusion on the sprocket cover casting?

I don't know. That's what I'm trying to find out.

For perspective, that piece was a short lived band aid issued as part of a warranty fix for those who broke a chain. It never came on a production bike (I'm pretty sure) and has limited if any practical use other than to make the customer feel good. Very few bikes had/have them.

If it were mine I'd throw the whole thing away.  That's just me.

Thanks. That was kinda the answer I was hoping for. I also have the case protector on this 71 which I understand has limited value now with today's chains however I was one of the unlucky ones back in 71 that threw a (new) chain through the case flying 95+ across Texas so I'm a little squeamish about the topic.

Yikes! You were one of the few and the proud.  ;D

The chain protector was always put on AFTER someone threw a chain which was timely (not).

While not conclusive, the rumors I heard, and for which there is a Honda service bulleitn, was that the vent hose from the battery was improper length and routing, was allowed to rest above the chain when on the sidestand. The minuscule drop of condensed vapor may have been enough to put a weak spot in the chain, thus causing the often unexpected breakage. Seldom did the break occur when someone was doing drag race starts, etc. Part of the (later) warranty work was to correct this vent tube, thus rendering the guard superfluous.

I was working as a flunkie in Honda shops when this was going on. Too young to be real technical about it, and i still may not have the full story, I did see the damage and hear the stories of many breaks. It was a true mystery at the time and Honda was really struggling to fix it. The vent tube story came out later.

It doesn't hurt to keep it if so inclined. Back to your original post, i can't offer any help.

The Protector is in the 71 partsbook. I believe it was on some models and the book lists the start # for that.

A big part of the problem back then, was not only the strength of chains, but the use of 16T sprockets on early models.

I have unnumbered cases on my K0 as well as the guard. I'm guessing there is a connection.  ;)

I noticed the case protector when I heard a horrible rattling sound coming from the sprocket. I took off the cover. Looking back, if that thing had completely busted off while I was going at speed, I'd be a dead man.

So I took the thing off. So far so good.

Just as I thought, it is a factory part & some of you will need it to be correct.

Used from 26,144 to 44,805... if your number ends in this range your bike had this on it.

BUT, they also ran 16T front srockets till then, switched to 18T at 44,806.

so the Q remains, will it work with 18T . ???

By this, do you mean will it fit? Don't see why not.

I have a 1974 loose leaf parts book from Honda USA and in that the steel protector runs from 1026144 to 2000000; the rubber runs from 1026144 onwards and there are 3 different covers :-

1000001 to 1026143
1026143 to 2000000
2000000 upwards

so it wouls seem to me to be production line mods, probably to counter the chain breakage. I also have all the bulletins and the 16 tooth sprocket went as part of a recall whilst the battery breather problem sort of put the onus on the owner
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).
