Bad Mass
« on: July 21, 2009, 07:42:31 AM »
Well, is Massachusetts becoming more biker averse?

1-Last month a noise ordanance was passed in Boston, seems you will now need to have
either the OEM mufflers or an EPA sticker on your pipes If an officer stops you for what
he Believes are loud pipes. Cough up $300 I believe the fine is.

2-This week a new law takes effect for all scooters. No more parking them on
sidewalks and you'll have to buy insurance, registration and a license plate (not just have a sticker)
oh yeah, and by the way "where's your helmet, buddy?".
IF a policeman determines your vehicle can go over 20mph you can get a ticket for:
non-registration $100, no plates $$ ?, no insurance $ and a $65 ticket for parking on the sidewalk,
UNLESS you can prove your vehicle will not go over 20mph!

3-next on the agenda? Can't wait to see what the legislators come up with.
peace,
michel

They passed that same law about only allowing stock pipes with EPA stamp on them here in Denver a couple of years ago.  Since then I have noticed no change at all in the amount of obnoxiously loud bikes and have not heard of a single incident of somebody being cited for having "illegal" pipes.  I'm not saying it hasn't happened, but it's apparently not something the cops are really on the look-out for, at least here.

I happen to agree with most of #2.  I've always felt that any motorized vehicle on public roads should, regardless of its engine displacement, be required to have insurance and registration just like any other vehicle.

Ah yes, Taxachusettes.

If you feel you are not paying enough taxes where you currently reside, just move to good ol' Taxachusettes and ye shall be ridden of extra lucre.

Next thing you know they'll create a breathing tax there. What a crazy place.

they're (the bums on beacon hill) aren't biker adverse; they're revenue addicted and with the popularity of scoots they see a cash cow. the sales tax hike is another example as is patrick's love affair with a rise in gas tax- won't let that dream die. but, we'll still have crap roads, and cut backs galore.

part of the reason they get away with it is because, like good sheep, most of the voters believe the answer to all our woes is yet more tax. doing a bang up job so far.

Next thing you know they'll create a breathing tax there. What a crazy place.

That is the end result of the "carbon tax" currently being pushed by the current administration.

They'll get there.  Little by little, step by step, desensitizing as they go.

You do exhale carbon don't you?  Shame on you for causing global warming and the end to all life on this planet.  Now you must pay!

I wonder if the tax will begin at birth, or if they'll wait until you have an income of some sort to garner?  Will the implanted chip monitor penalize the exercise nuts more than the couch potatoes?  Hmmm....

I actually agree about #2. Too many idiots/bad drivers buying scooters and can do as they please as have no insurance or other overhead costs. I dont agree about NOT parking on the sidewalk. All bikes should be able to park on the sidewalk. Works in every other country.

cheers

Any truth to the scuttlebutt about a bunch of these mean scooter people getting together and
taking up all the parking spaces around City Hall. ONE scotter per parking place.

Actually, I bet you couldn't get more than 10-15 to do it because most of these owners are
low paid workers. (or am I projecting my ignorance here?) :-\

Taxes are high in Mass, but so are property values and personal income.
Funny, it's similar to an ethnic thing. If you live here and knock the place, I can empathize with you, but if you don't live here, I feel that you have no reason to be critical. I am rather partial to our state and have lived here for most of my life.
Nobody knows what the outcome of the pipe law will be, but I have to think that it will be like the seat belt law. If you eff up and get caught while riding, it's an extra fine that can be thrown at you. There will likely be few incidents where folks are stopped solely because their pipes are too loud.
Scooters can go pretty fast these days, it makes sense that they should be controlled and inspected.

After living in Germany for a few years, one of the things I miss is the motorcycle parking areas. Often times they were right next to the handicap parking so whenever you went to to the big shopping centres or convention centres you always get front row parking. In the bigger cities you could also park on the sidewalks with no issues whatsoever as long as the pedestrians could get by.

Here in Canada I have seen guys get warnings (posssibly tickets???) for putting multiple bikes in a parking space that has a parking meter. I think that is ridiculous....

RI I think is worse...I grew up in MA and it has its ups and downs with LAws also but, RI's goverment is pathetic...all they care about is downtown providence and making it nice so people who visit think its a great place to be. There DMV setup is like a free for all!! I couldn't remember if I was in line for 6 hrs for a registration and license transfer or for food stamps!! THis is my favorite...I apparently had a suspended license in RI for the last 11 YEARS!! have been stopped in RI with no issues at all UNTIL I went to switch over from MA to RI.

They slapped me with a $500 fine $75 misc fee??? $60 for license and $100 for registration and I don't even get a #$%*in" title back for my bike!! even though it was titled in MA.. >:(

ok...I'm done...I feel better :D

Ecosse,

I agree and am with you 100% except on the move to New Hampshire!  ;D I would ONLY move south!

And we definitely don't need someone from Kans"ass" pissing on our State, even if he did VISIT here once or twice. >:(  At least we have mountains, hills, beaches, old growth forests, great cities, and ACTUAL IMPORTANT US History!  ;D

As far as the Noise Reg goes, I say ABOUT FREAKING TIME!!! Do you REALLY think it is aimed at us and our old Honda's? Give me a break! It is a (lame ass) attempt to try and quiet the Harley with open pipe crowd.

I also don't think that Scooters should be able to park on the sidewalks. I DO think that there should be designated parking spots for bikes EVERYWHERE. Can you imagine the anarchy if you allowed people to park anywhere they freaking wanted?

Bottom line is that this is just mostly for increasing revenue, thanks to the Governor I DIDN'T vote for! Hell a Title now costs $75.00 and EVERYTHING gets titled and the Sales Tax is going up to 6.25% from 5%. But I can #$%* about it because I LIVE HERE!!

If you use such a small amount of information to justify your viewpoint, I'd find it difficult to rely on your opinion.
But what do I know, I've just lived here for going on 60 years.

I've only been to KC a couple of times, I really couldn't say what it's like to live there, but I've been impressed by the music history of the KC area for a long while.
If you come back here, let me know and I'll take you for a ride around, maybe it would change your perception of the place.

i've been hassled by cops about the noise of my muscle cars and had a hell of a time convincing them the exhaust was in fact oem. the morons are accustom to civics with tail pipes the size of #2 pencils. the reason modern honda cars have tachs is so you can tell the engine is running.

so, if ya own an old bike where replacement exhaust is either not available or too expensive, you are at the mercy of a cop on a power trip. lots of those around. but, i would like to see those easy rider/dentists taken down a notch. those harleys are louder than any big block i owned!

parking small cc machines on the side walk i see little problem. they're not much bigger than bicycles and they could instead make an ordinance about size of minimum sidewalk width in relationship to parking permission.

thank god coup deville patrick is a one termer! whatta punk. at least mitt romney used a crown vic for personal transportation.  btw: nh is what mass. could be, sorry.

When I started this thread it was NOT to bash Massachusetts.
Every state has good points for sure, otherwise why would you live there.

Just wanted to point out some recent laws being passed that concern
some of us on this board. I know when I go to visit my kid in Boston I'll
think twice before taking my Kawasaki H1 with stingers. It is loud,
much louder than my OEM CB550 exhaust, but not excessive. The H1
would get me a ticket because the stingers are not OEM nor have
an EPA sticker.

peace,
