1978 Honda 550/Charging system
« on: July 22, 2009, 09:38:27 AM »
I am having a problem with my charging system, the bike needs to be at 2000 RPM before the current at the battery reaches 13.5 volts. I have gone through and cleaned all connections i found and made sure the head light and tail light are OEM. This does have a vetter windshield with the annoying buzzer on the blinker. I was looking at the handaman ignition to reduce load on the battery. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

You might want to move this to the tech thread. You'll want to talk to Bob about that.

Welcome aboard!

IMHO, if you're getting anything above, say, 13 volts at the battery terminals at an RPM just above idle (2000), you don't have a problem at all.  I mean, after all, you're charging up above the nominal battery voltage at an RPM that you'll nearly always be above, except when idling at a stop light or something.

Just go ride!!

Posting in agreement. You don't get much charging on the low side of RPMs, just the way they come.
