fork rebuild with -2 tubes, questions.
« on: July 26, 2009, 06:13:04 AM »
Hello,
I am rebuilding my 77 750f forks with -2 tubes from cycle x with progressive springs. I was told by cycle x that I will need to cut the spring in order for this to work. Question is how much am I supposed to cut? 2"?
thanks

You might want to ask Cycle X, although seems to me if you lose 2" of travel, you might want a progressively wound spring that provides more resistance as you get closer to maximum travel. I can't see where you have more than 2-3" of travel left, and it would be good to have a bit more resistance to bottoming. I'd say see how much spring you can compress in the tube, then figure how much you need to get rid of. Are you going to run a higher viscosity fork oil?

also you have to see how much shorter the new tubes are from the old ones.  if i remember right the -2 cycle x tubes are only a 1/2in or so shorter then the factory F tubes.
might be wrong....you have both in front of you?

Hie em up side the head with fork spring for no directions, sometimes you had to cut springs, more often you were cutting spacers for top of springs, definitely see what oil they recommend, guess @ 20wt,stock was ATF in earlier days.Bill
