4 ohm coils, would they be ok on my 750?
« on: July 22, 2009, 08:39:14 pm »
I"ve got a set of modern ignition coils off an 86 ZX1000 that I'd like to use,  I'm just not sure if they're ok to use.  they're 4 ohm coils though, so I'm unsure if they'll work or cause problems for my bike.
These bikes dont die, they hibernate until the right person wakes them up again.

Stock coils are 5ohm.  Many people run after market 3ohm coils on their 750's without any problems, as long as the charging system is in good condition.  So I don't see why a set of 4ohm coils would be a problem.

What about those Dyna 2.2 ohm dual output coils? I thought those were the recommended coils for the CBs using a Dyna ignition. Crap, I hope I didn't order the wrong coils   ???

my issue is I'm still on points presently, mostly because I'm broke as can be, and this isnt a bike I intend to drop tons of cash on.

Where did you hear that?  I'm pretty sure that 2.2ohm coils would be extremely taxing on any of these bikes' charging systems.

well, its a nonissue apparently. and WOW do I feel dumb.  rainwater got into the plg boots, and screwed with me until they dried out.

I think all I really need is some new plug boots and good seals+dielectric grease to fix the problem permanently.

It's extremely rare for both coils in a set to go bad simultaneously.  Hell, it's rare for a single coil to go bad all of a sudden since it's a sealed unit with no moving parts.  When there's an ignition problem it's usually something other than the coils.

What do you mean?  They sell coils in pairs, or they recommend 2.2ohms for the sohc4 750?

They sell the Dyna 2000 with 2.2 OHM for the CB750 SOHC (with a 3.0 OHM option)

Interesting... :-\  but there are all kinds of other things one can buy for a particular bike that aren't necessarily a good idea for it.

Very true. I called Chris at Z1 and he's going to ship me a set of 3.0 coils and I'll return the 2.2s. Glad I strolled by this thread. What I've read since this all says to get the 3.0 OHM.

Thanks Gordon
