Can I glue emblems to my tank?
« on: July 23, 2009, 05:27:58 am »
I have a super nice paint job on my tank but someone has removed the emblems and filled in the area where they would attach. Is there an adhesive that I can use to glue new emblems to the paint that will hold?

I wouldn't glue them i would use some thin double sided tape, if you ever want to remove them it will be much easier with the tape.

3M makes a double sided tape for automotive use.

Any good body shop supply place will have it.

For about $8, you can get a little roll of 3M double sided tape. Highly recommended and wont ruin your paint if you need to remove the emblems later on.

Thanks - the concensus is 3M double sided tape. My only concern now is how strong it is and whether it will hold them on at freeway speed.

My emblems were put on with double sided foam tape by the PO.  No problems with them pulling off at speed.

My emblems stayed on doing 100mph on the freeway. I think you'll be okay. ;)

most new cars have emblems installed using the 3m tape or something similar, you don't emblems flying off new cars on the highway all that often.

Did mine with 3M. Same fears. You will NOT believe how strong that stuff is.

Honda uses the 3M tape on all its cars as well as new bikes.  My 1800cc VTX had all the emblems on that way before I intentionally removed them as a cleanup.  I know they stay on at 130mph.  Actually never heard of anybody have them fall off.

3M definitely know what they're doing when it comes to adhesive tape.  I was working with some of their reflective tape ten years ago and stuck a small excess piece to the fly button of my jeans.  I still own and wear the jeans for garage/yard work (they've since been made into cut-off shorts), and that piece of tape is still firmly attached to the button, and still very reflective, even after all this time and probably one hundred cycles through the washer and dryer.

WOW....that was unanimous ..... ;D

Side note, when removing badges with double sided tape just use a hair dryer and heat it up a bit, this softens the adhesive and makes it relatively easy to get off...

Agreed 100%.  Also, when removing taped on emblems use dental floss in a sawing fashion between the emblem and tank/cover, lifting a little as you progress down the length of the emblem.  The floss will not scratch your paint and you will not have to try to pry it off with a screwdriver(ouch).  Goo-Gone or even WD-40 will remove the remaining glue with no damage to the paint.
