'76 F float level - help needed
« on: July 24, 2009, 06:13:11 AM »
hi
I have a box stock 1976 CB750F.  I have the carbs off and would like to set the float levels  (they may never have been checked).

I have a float level gauge and the Shop Manual  (I think it says 26 mm).

Here is my question:  if I put the gauge under the floats (it is essentially U shaped) and against the bottom of the carb, on my stock carbs there is an indentation about 1/4" wide where this would happen. Do I put the float gauge into the indentation??  It is right beside the float on each side.  This makes a difference of 1-2 mm in the setting.

OR should I remove the rubber float bowl gasket and put the gauge against the bottom of the carb where the gasket just was??

In other words - the 26mm setting is a measure between the bottom of the float just as it closes and . . precisely what surface ??

         many thanks!

I have the same bike and had to make the same decision:

I made a measuring tool and split the difference by setting it against the inside rim of the gasket lip.  I made sure every bowl had the same height and I haven't had any problems since.

Someone who knows or sure will probably be along shortly but I suspect a millimeter up or down won't have a significant effect as long as the bowls are the same within that range.

Another problem I had was getting the gasket in properly so it didn't hang up on the float later, and cleaning everything off the hinge assembly (scotchbrites and pipe cleaners)

From the top lip, same bike as you.  This site had a wealth of knowledge for me in the tuning stages of my learning...

Thanks , guys!  That is exactly the information I was looking for.

Great carbs to work on... just finished working on the CVs that came with the DOHC models from 79 on . . . what a nightmare!!!

Measured them and they are all off by quite a bit so this is worthwhile.
The motor is out having some oil leaks fixed and this is a good time to fine tune things.

         thanks again

Amen.

I mesured my carbs with the gasket seals off. Seems OK.
