Installing cam chain tensioner from the top
« on: July 20, 2009, 04:25:38 PM »
So I have gone through the denial phase and dealt with the fact that my cam chain tensioner has bit the big one on my CB550F. The little peg just spins and tightens absolutely nothing.

Luckily I have a spare motor with a brand new (never used) tensioner. I know I might get flogged for this by some... Not wanting to miss out on riding days, I've decided to go the "patch" route and pull the tensioner from my spare motor and to do a full and proper replacement at the end of the riding season (tending to the guide and replacing the chain).

Now for my next trick! Seeing how I have pulled out the tensioner without removing the head, I will attempt to replace it in my CB550 the same way... from the top, with the cam and cam sprocket removed. I have practiced putting it back in the spare motor and it seems to be ok. A little tricky to hold flattened, but ok. I hope it will be the same deal with the motor mounted in the frame and that the top of the frame will not interfere. Does anyone have experience with this? Any advice?

Is there any interest in me documenting the process with pictures?

Sure Mike..

If you can do that w/o pulling the head (or popping the cylinders up)..I'd like to see that.  I've never done it myself..but have always wondered.  Others say it can't be done (which includes both the tensioner and chain guide..on the opposite side of cam chain). Prove them wrong..okay?

Thanks,
