How do you drill out a fuel lid lock?
« on: July 24, 2009, 01:54:10 PM »

Just got a pristine tank of ebay for my FZR but the guy had already sold the keys with the ignition and the lid is locked.

I've seen some bikes with mismatched tanks that will open with any old key or a screwdriver.  That doesn't bother me as long as it will still latch.  How do I make that happen without risking too much damage...drill in there with an 1/8" bit?  Jam a scredriver in the lock?

should be able to pick the top off and unlatch it. the plungers are a pain to deal with.
Don't go too deep if you drill it, there is a small spring and valve inside there, part of vent system (don't ask how I know  ::))

I took my ignition to a locksmith and he made me a key for me.  It to him a short time to make it.  Take the tank and get a new key.  It was about $10.

If you just want it open you could try a bump key first.

tried the screwdriver with no luck.  It started to mangle the metal around the lock so I stopped.  Locksmiths around here are too pricey.

Not sure what a bump key is?

How deep should the drill bit go if I drill it?  And what should I aim for?

Its easier to google it.  Basically its a key filed down and using a mallet you "bump" the pins out of the way to open the tumbler.  This way you could remove the cap either replace it or rework it for another key.

I would be surprised if a drill bit would work and not badly damage the cap on the top.
