1980 Honda CB750-F Main Fuse blown

Howdy

First time on this forum.  I just bought the bike in question about a week ago, not running.  It needed a new battery which I just got from the shop today.  As I was hooking up the battery I got a big spark, but continued on.  Got it hooked up, turned the key and the ignition lights came on.  Cool.  Then, as a test I switched on the turn signal.  At that moment the main fuse blew and everything went dead.

I don't know much about working on bikes and even less about electrical.  I opened the plastic box where the main fuse is but can't even see how to remove it.  I took out the two small screws and when I did two metal clips fell out, they seemed to have been fried and dislodged from whatever they were connected to.

If anyone can tell me how to go about checking/replacing this main fuse I'd appreciate it.  Also, I'm of course wondering why this happened in the first place.  NO I did not hook the battery up the wrong way.  I'm positive ;)

I forgot to mention that the bike (which I got from the original owner) is not only not running but has been sitting garaged for several years.  He didn't do anything to prep it for storage.

If its like the 80 650 those 2 "clips" are what is left of the main fuse.  The fuse is a thin metal strip that runs between the screws.  I just bought some for my 650 at honda for $1 each.

Ohhhhh.  I hadn't considered that.  I thought I needed to pull something else apart but that also makes sense.  The clips were totally fried for sure.

Can I get that fuse at an auto parts store or do I need to wait for the bike shop to open on Tuesday?

I don't think the auto parts store carries these. If I remember it was a 30 amp,old CB750Ks were 15 amp.glass fuses. You could make one but you might want to wait.If you don't want to wait, just get a cheap glass fuse holder w/wires,install proper amp and install,if you do,get a couple extra fuses.Good Luck,Bill

Yes I've seen inline fuse holders used.     30A is correct.
