I should have brought the book to work with me. There are two pics, one on a Bill Head bike and one on a Dixon bike and very tasty as well.
In respect of Bens digital camera, have you seen some of his pics.

That is not a drum but a magnesium conical hub with a disc inside and lockheed caliper.
Have no scanner on hand but on page 67 of this beautiful cataloque it is said that Bill Smith took first place on it on the Isle of Man.
Tomorrow will scan that page, has a marvelous picture of that 500 engine on it.

Rob

I see.... but never saw one as big

this one i shoot in a recent swapmeet

did a little search on david dixon and came upon this amazing dixon/yosh catalog from axl's site, well worth downloading, it tells the whole story and is full of tuning tips

Love that picture,.. wish I had a better copy suitable for framing.

Interesting to note the short intake manifolds. This is what I would expect for a highly tuned high RPM engine. Other photo's I see have the much longer "S" shaped manifolds that would seem to be out of place on a race engine?? When I see headers with short primaries, I assume the engine is tuned for high RPM use and expect to see short intakes too.

Wish I could order a dozen of those engines now ;D

was thinking the same, quite differnet from those S manifolds in bills bike

I think I almost see some downdraft angle, tired to do the same in my bike.

Poor Rod, we totally kidnapped his thread by now! Sorry!

Still a bit miffed as to why the HRC basket would have a lower ratio, the 500's clutch torque capacity is borderline to begin with.

No problem TG - not sure now that clutch is a 'special' and whilst it does take an extra plate, that will be offset by the increased torque of the gearing. As others have said, there may be reduced frictional losses through the tranny and less load on the crank but it is always a case of trade-offs. I had made the assumption when I bought the bike that as this clutch was in a race engine with a CR cluster that they were both trick parts. Did you get any info from Ellis?

rod

yes, i did

option A (cheap) is just changing 1st & 5th to get a closer ratio span but I cant see the real advantage.

option B is a full C/R gear cluster that more or less matches the Yoshi 5spd CR ratios. expensive but about a third of what the Nova 6 spd should cost

So just have to decide if I jump into this.

anyone else?

If I may get back to that engine picture, the intakes are different than what is on the race bike shown.

I know the pics aren't clear but the racer uses longer looking aluminum intakes, wouldn't you say Rob?

Sorry, and back to regular programming.

Hey Brent,

You are correct the racer is a 'prototype' and has aluminium intakes.

Turboguzzi,.. don't forget to post the gearbox info here too so others can find it. http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=52012.0;all

Might be enough interest for a group buy? I would like to know the ratios of the new 1st - 5th gears?

Caught up with Tony Dunnell at Caldwell Park this w/e, he originally built and raced the bike at the TT. He tells me that the engine was bought from David Dixon as a complete motor, and came from one of Dixon's race machines. The clutch basket and CR cluster were already in. Tony has suggested that I try to track down anyone who rode the CB500's for Dixons to get more info - any body know some names I could start with?

I'll start a new thread regarding the pics to see if there is enough intrest before I cut my book up, as it is bound rather tight and won't lie flat in the scanner.
There are quite a few good pics in the book of Bill on the Dixon CB500 TT winning production bike, several of the 3 time F2 winner Alan Jackson and quite a few more that might intrest others. I think there is another of Bill on a Dixon Formula bike that is out of this world but not sure which formula.
They will be A4 size printed on gloss photograph quality paper sent out in stiffened photo envelopes plus postage. They should come out around $8/9 and there's a good chance that the Bill smith ones will be signed if I see him on Saturday.

+2     anything you can find out Sam. By the time I got this engine it had had two DNFs on the island so rods, barrels and head had all been changed from the original Dixon motor. As far as I'm aware, I just inherited the cases, modded clutch and CR tranny, the inlets which I think are yoshi, and the 31mm CRs. When I bought the bike I simply gave these plus some good barrels and top end to Richard Albans at TTS and let him do the rest. It would be good to know what rods and pistons Dixon used, comp ratio, bhp figures, rev limit ....everything!, and although the yoshi TT profile seems probable its worth asking what cam they ran. I'm not fully sure what all the other bits are that I got with the bike, there were two crates of parts (some clearly scrap), I never junked any of it but its all buried deep in the back of the workshop. To be honest when I bought the bike all those years ago I didn't really think about the history of it, I just wanted to get racing. I've found a couple of pics from when I got it back on the track in the early 80's - will try and upload.
