What's with this chain?
« on: July 26, 2009, 05:49:40 AM »
After reading all about it here I bought a 100 link 530 chain from Dennis Kirk for my 71 CB750 with stock 18/48 sprockets. Well the chain just barely fits. The adjustment shows the chain adjusts in front of all the first of the seven chain markers. What's up with that and can I keep it this way? I don't have an extended swing arm or any of that. The 100 link chain I just threw away adjusted to the center of the seven lines and that's what I'd expect from this one. Will this chain stretch or does any one have an opinion on what I should do? BTW, I've emailed DK twice and they've chosen to ignore me.

All chains stretch.

You have that much adjustment avaialb eto you because of how much they can stretch.
New chains should be pretty close to the forwardmost adjustment lines.

Ah, the 'ole "chain strech" misnomer.
It is actually the pins holding the links together that wear a few thousandths each.
100 links X .01" of wear on each = 1" of "stretch"
As long as you have enough slack for proper adjustment, you'll be o.k.

"Will this chain stretch"?.. count on it

If its not pre-stretched, you will be adjusting it in a day or two.

Does the chain have a name on the sideplates?

Hi,

use it, no problem. I have a 100 link with stock sprockets, too.
The chain will stretch and you have to adjust it the first 700 miles very often.

Yes, it's a misnomer, and most people who do their own bike maintenance know it's not technically correct, but it's a harmlessly used incorrect term, and it's much easier to say than "the chain has elongated due to link pin wear". ;D

The chain gets longer. The term 'stretch' does not apply to links or pins specifically, but the overall length of the chain. Therefore, the chain does, in fact, stretch, if we throw out the fact that 'stretching' usually pertains to some form of elasticity, or the loss of elasticity.

In any case, yeah, it'll stretch out. :)
No.
