CB400F project - stalled at tank replacement
« on: July 13, 2009, 10:08:32 PM »
hi all

i am making some heiwa style modes to my CB400F and would like to replace the large/square tank with something smaller and rounder.

can anyone suggest some smaller/rounder tanks that will clear the coils?

I will chime in since no one else has. the short answer is that with enough metal work any tank would probably fit. I know that in the 750s the tanks are interchangeable BUT..... there are differences in length so even though it fits it causes problems with the seat location. as far as your bike, hopefully someone familiar with your bike will chime in.

Also as a side note, this section is for project build threads... so start documenting your progress. :)

thanks for the reply.

pics of the bike as bought off ebay and as it stands now are attached.  project progress so far has been:

service/tune
new front brake pads
replaced head stem bearings
replaced front fork seals
new 'cocktail shaker' muffler
new firestones (not shown in pic)
pod filters
bobbed rear fender with LED brake light
shortened original seat to kind of suit bobbed rear fender (looks pretty bad i know)
bobbed front fender
mini indicators
remounted headlight
new grips

the to do list includes:

smaller rounder tank (the smaller the better)
brat/heiwa style seat
relocate electrics and battery, ditch the side covers
smaller speedo/tach

debating pod filters. where'd you get 'em and what size are they?

desperately need new front pads!

Oh and I just posted a thread on a cafe sat today. you should check it out.

thanks in advance - Javi

Interestingly I mounted a 400F tank on my last 750 cafe bike. It fit great.
But most any thing can be made to clear the coils if you have a big enough hammer...

A CB450 tank may fit as may the smaller CL version.

Good luck.
13 in the garage and counting...

hi javi

tyre sizes 400-18 R and 350-18 F

pods are generic units i bought from a local shop (in australia) so probably not much help to you.  i think they were 32 or 34mm from memory.

i've picked up a honda tl185 tank (its really skinny).  not quite fitted...
