Ok new wheels on the 750 Opinions? Good or bad?
« on: July 30, 2009, 08:26:30 PM »
Ok I had asked earlier if using 79 to 83 SS and K model wheel would fit a 73. Well after mounting the front rim on...all was good. The one thing different...the speedometer cable goes on the left side instead of the right side. So to the back. The back rim...I had to take the spacer out of the sprocket side on the original wheel. then I had to take another spacer and and grind it down some so it would work. I used the original axle and the adjusters. So I got this all done, Took it out and rode it around the block. It rode good. The other thing...I went from 18 inch back the a 17 inch back. Still the same at 19 on the front.
The pics are not that great. It was getting dark and I was really tired.

Ok here is better pics. Give me some opinions. I have mixed feeling about these wheels on this bike. Not sure if there is too much black on the bike or what.

I'm tied honestly. part of me likes them, but another part says go back to spoke wheels.  they just dont "fit in" on that bike to me.  but thats my opinion. if you're happy, keep em.

I am just like you. I keep thinking about redoing the spoke wheels and putting them back on. The spoke are rusty and the only way to fix that is replace the spokes. Plus the rims need cleaned up and re chromed. so at the moment the comstars look better.

Im a little more on the like it side. Strange, but it kinda gives it the feel of an old VW look? Cant figure out why? But thats the vibe I get. Maybe the black mags? But I like it.

Not being picky but your chain looks like it needs a good lube. Good job on the wheel installation and sure wish I had your pipes :D

You could always paint them, or polish them.  You could wear out the tires that are on the comstars before you go back to spokes too.
Does it ride any differently with that 17 on the rear?  Lowering the rear a little like that should increase the trail making the bike a bit more stable at certain speeds, but handling may be decreased a tiny bit at slow speeds.

If you like them keep them, it's your bike and it's cool.   I'm not a comstar guy though, I'm an alloy wheel guy.

I would rather have the ones on the 77-78 SS 750's. I think its the black that is getting me to teeter totter back and forth between liking them and not liking them.

The front forks look long.  Maybe slide the tubes up a 1/2 inch.  This just about make up for the difference you went down in the rear.  At least it is a free thing to do and you can put them back if it does not work out.

I would slide the tubes up an inch to give you the same rake/trail as stock.

These reverse comstars also look good polished.  I've seen someone strip the paint and polish the inside.  Looked good!

Found the pic:

Ok, the polished look REALLY helps make them look right. thats probably why I dislike them on the 750, the color contrast just isnt right.

Since he only lost an inch of tire size in the back, would 1/2 an inch make it about right?  1/2 inch lost on bottom, 1/2 inch lost on top, so it was only dropped 1/2 in in rear.  I was thinking the stance might be off a bit for such a basically stock looking bike..

It rode fine. I should put it down off the center stand and get some pics. Might get a better look at what it is. Yes the polished rims look alot better.

Here is a pic off the center stand. I put a brick under the kick stand so it would sit up straight. doesnt look like it messed with it original stance.

here is a pic. I hope I dont make someone mad. I used a pic for example of a stock 73 750 to see the difference in stance.
