I found this on feeBay the other day and thought it was pretty ingenious. ..  doOd took drag pipes and fitted old VW bug muffler tips to them to quiet it down. Apparently the VW mufflers are the same ID as the drag pipes and he custom fit them. I thought it might help someone out to do something different with their exhaust.

I wonder what they sound like? A bit less loud drag pipes would be kewl - but if they sound like that "chuffleing" sound that old bugs do, it might be weird. . . lol.

I just thought it was a pretty inventive exhaust mod and something different from most systems - doesn't look like it would be too hard (or spendy), either.

I would think they could be drilled around the dia of the exhaust tip and made to look like machine gun ends as well..  ;-)

do they have that "whistle" that the stock aircooled vw exhaust made?

i don't think a sohc would. that's more a product of piston arrangement  (boxer 4) and some exhaust leak (so many of them had one).  we had several real beetles in our family and that tweeting sound was almost non existent with proper exhaust. whereas i've heard scores of old (pre imprezza era) subarus with exhaust leaks sound just like the old (real) bugs.

still, i'm curious about how this would sound on our sohc/4.

I was kinda thinking the SOHC4 would sound different than the VW too. I bet this drag pipes/VW tips exhaust arrangement sounds pretty cool. Open drag pipes are a little much, for me, so I bet these just might be the ticket - loud but not all outlaw biker loud. I like to be able to start the bike late at night (when I usually ride) without my neighbors conspiring to kill me.  ;D

I don't know who made the exhaust I have now but it's perfect for me. It's a 4 into 2 system, definitely older with real good chrome. It's loud when you want it to be (giving it some throttle, showing off for the boys) but can be fairly quiet too, if you are careful with it (cops behind you, etc.   lol)

The pipes and muffler on my bike are like that. Soft when you are just doing normal riding, thru sub divisions etc.. but when you twist the throttle it is nicely loud. Those pipes look great Ecosse!

It's a CB750 chrome guard - I think off of a DOHC even. Required some modification to fit but then fit the CB500 chain perfect, believe it or not. The bracket halfway down is kind of temporary, I plan a bit more fetching of a mod soon. The 4 to 2 sounds awesome, I get compliments on it all the time like 'it sounds healthy' etc.  lol   I don't know who made them 'back in the day' but it's really well made with heavy, deep chrome. They get bid up pretty high on the feeBay when they show up, though.

The seat is just some vintage chopper part also from 'back in the day'. It's a bit funky but I like it - very low and comfortable for me (and being able to touch the ground with my feet is nice. .  .lol) It was kinda cool that it uses the stock seat hinge and lock and the tool tray still fits underneath nicely.

Also, I have a lower, more square sissy bar I am going to change to soon as well, I don't really like that tall one.

Opps, I guess I just thought it was Ecosse bike for some reason.. Still I maintain those are some nice pipes, and on a bike like mine. Sure wish I could hear them roar!..

Thank ya - I was lucky that they came with the bike (albeit the APO had painted the otherwise good chrome flat black. . .yuk, such a pain to remove). I should record an audio clip of them - they do sound pretty impressive. Mellow at idle or casual riding but get loud fast if you give it some revs.

Here are a coupe of chrome chain guards that may fit.. Freebay of course..

http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=CB550+Chrome+chain+guard&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=clB2SsLmDc6_tgefs82WCQ&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4

Freebay?  LOL - more like FeeBay or GreedBay - they are just so jacking sellers nowadays, it's not even funny. I really wish Google would step up and compete with them as eBay is SUCH a bloated monopoly and needs competition really bad.

For some reason, I didn't even know Honda ever made a chrome metal chain guard for the CB500/550 - ya learn something here everyday!  I just used the CB750 one I had from a bunch of DOHC parts my friend gave me, because it was free and I could make it work.

I'm on a mission to get rid of as much of the plastic on my bike as possible. . .lol. (it had the black plastic chain guard, before)

My bad it was a typo.. There are actually a few ebay clones, however they just dont get the traffic that feebay gets. I agree tho some one like Google would force ebay to shape up. I have what looks to be a chrome chain guard for the 500/550 on mine tho I can not say for sure as it came with the bike I think. Look around they are out there, just not easy to find and some are good and some are just universal crap.

Look around they are out there, just not easy to find and some are good and some are just universal crap.

LOL. . .it's all good - feeBay is just a sore point with me, I am just SO tired of their endless rule changes, fee hikes, etc. along with the so-called 'Best Match' default search option which would be more aptly named "Best Bribe" as it almost solely dependent on placing listings at the top that have spent the most money for stupid fluff options (like bold title, hosting pictures with eBay, "listing designer" fancy borders, etc.) that cost more in fees than instead of being focused on the actual keywords in the title, great feedback, low shipping, etc. We are listing with Amazon now and have tried some of the other ones but they just can't compete. Only Google or maybe the new Yahoo/MicroSoft team could really do it. Their key to success would be KEEP IT SIMPLE unlike feeBay's model which is apparently "constantly change and complicate things + chase away/alienate small sellers in favor of generic big-box junk peddlers"   lol (/rant)

Yea, I agree. I only by from ebay when I have no other choice. Luckly I found this forum and its given me a wealth of links to things I could not find on my own. Plus I listed some thing in the parts wanted section and bam I was flooded with PM's with items I needed. I would much rather by from members here. Amazon, odd I never thought to look there. Do you have a link? "(/rant)" hum you a game player? EQ Maybe? :-)

Buying on feeBay is still pretty good as basically it's ALL about the buyer now, as the seller can't even leave anything but positive feedback anymore and what not.

I don't know about bike stuff on Amazon - we just sell automotive/construction/motorcycle manuals and literature on there.

no, not really a game player, except for the old-school video games and pinballs we also have a business with (we have games on location throughout Portland at clubs and bars) "(/rant)" was more like a funny fake HTML tag.  ..lol. .  .. I used to do graphic art/web page designing years ago and am a proud geek still. . .he he he
