Topic: Rickman project update

Rickman project is moving along as time allows. Rebuilt the 1972 engine and many, many hours of frame and wheel polishing.  Brakes and ignition are next.  Any advice on ignition upgrades would be helpful.

Wow that is going well. Is that a bare metal frame?

 It has the original nickel plated Rickman frame.  It was not in the best shape when I started working on it, but looks very nice now.

Hi,

nice project and a nice original Rickman fork.
But I think you have to exchange the fork legs and the brake disc to the other side.

Thanks for photos.  Great bike!  I have seen the rotor mounted on both the left and right side of the fork on Rickmans.  The Rickman assembly guide shows the rotor on right side.  This Rickman was never completed, and this is how the forks were mounted.  Not sure which side is correct.

What rearsets are on the bike?

The rearsets on this particular Rickman are from a Laverda Jota.  The bike was originally built in the mid 1980's by Lance Weil, aka "Rickey Racer."  He was one of the earliest American privateers racing in Europe and later became one of the foremost Laverda experts in the US.

Weil died about three years ago as the result of a shop lathe accident.

Standard location for the caliper is on the right side, but the orange Rickman has it reversed.  Since the Rickman speedometer drives from the rear hub, reversing the fork tubes is easier.

BTW, the right side oil tank cover on this bike is cast aluminum.    RR

i'm following this! rr, thanks for that background; sad to hear of such a tragic end though. if rickman1 doesn't mind could you expand on the reason for swapping front brake sides and detail the rear speedo?

The orange Rickman is exactly as Lance built it; I didn't change a thing. Perhaps he just liked the look of the caliper on the left since the rear caliper is on the right... That bike is  now owned by a friend from Los Angeles and I'll be starting on my other Rickman-Honda sometime or other...   {sigh}

The speedometer drive used on the Rickman-Honda CR's is a standard CB750 unit. It engages a tang on the right side of the rear hub and drives a very LOOOOOOONG speedometer cable that runs to the standard Honda speedometer. RR

Those are Rob Simpson's orange Rickman and black/silver Read-Titan at the show. Great bikes and a really good guy! 

He's working on another Rickman CR now, and you can bet it will also be top-notch.  RR

Your best bet would be a place like Motion Pro, where they already make that cable, you just need a longer one. They would need the spec, and it would be pricey but at least you would have the right one. When I get back to my Rickman build, I will need to do the same thing.
