i need a pic for wiring help
« on: October 25, 2009, 10:57:13 AM »
i am trying to wire up the horn on my cb350 and having a problem with the wires from the switch. i have a orange, blue gray and green. the green goes from the horn button to the ground on horn  and then there is the acessory wire (hot) that goes to the horn. so when you hit the horn button it grounds it. i have nothing.. what am i missing.. a pic of the insides of the switch would be great. thanks

Use a test bulb to check your wiring, motorcycle horns are notorious for just stopping working for no good reason.
Your wiring may be fine.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

tap it with the but of a screw driver while pressing the button and see if that helps... and to test ur horn run some leads straight from the battery to it so you know for sure... u can get a horn for like 11 buck outta J and P cycles

Divide and conquer.

Test your horn first.  Disconnect the wires and use test leads to connect the horn directly to the battery.  If is makes the proper noise, then you know it's wiring or switch.  Jump to "Wiring".

Horn:
If it makes no noise or just a single thump, try tapping the horn with a screwdriver butt to loosen any crud.  Also try reversing the wires.  Test again.  If no change, then try the adjuster screw.  If no change, look for a new horn.

Wiring:
One horn wire is hot when the key is in running position.  Test it with a volt meter.

The other wire is grounded when the horn button is pressed.  Test this wire with an ohm meter between the wire and engine block.  If ohms fall from infinite to zero when you press the horn button, then that wire and the button are good.

One of these three tests will lead you to the fault.

Oh, and here is a great site for wiring questions.  It has interactive diagrams so you can turn off the systems you aren't interested in seeing, leaving only the system you are chasing.  The wire colors are pretty close to actual to boot.

old school i have been using the diagram and another to build my harness from scratch. so far so good. -lol  i tested the horn by directly ptting it on the battery. i got a noise, so the horn works. i have the horn powered up when in the running position and the green wire from switch to the horn. nothing.. guess it has something to do with the horn button. any suggestions on what to look for in the switch.  where does the switch get it's ground from??

The Grey wire is the blinker lights power from the blinker control module. The grey wire is hot for the L/R blinker lever movement to either L or R.

The Green wire is the power wire from the horn. It's actually the power continuation from the main ign key power wire (pictured black) to the horn. The green sits as an open ground waiting for the horn button to be pressed. The actual ground occurs by pressing the button closing the circuit and passing to ground thru the casing to handlebars (the frame /chassis ground)..............that's how mine all work anyway  :)

The Green wire is usually soldered to a spring mounted tab  behind the button.
The wire may have come loose from the button/switch mounting.

The actual ground contacts inside the casing/behind the button, usually become corroded with time and prevent proper ground contact. General cleanout and light smear of di-electric grease on the contact patch usually restores/maintains horn switch function.

Sorry about the fractured descriptions....... :P
