A few minor questions
« on: July 30, 2009, 09:18:59 AM »
I finally got me Diamond chain and JT sprockets in the mail. Replacing the old ones was a task, having never done it before. But it all went smoothly and I could probably do it again in a quarter of the time now that I have the experience. I think I just grew up a little.

1) But I have a question about the chain. Out of the box, it was all greased up. I put it on and my wheel spun beautifully, but I'm not sure. Do I have to clean off the packaging grease and apply new stuff or should I leave it as is and grease as needed or should I just go ahead and apply new grease?

2) I don't know if it's just more noticeable now that she runs smoother with the new chain/sprox, but my engine seems to vibrate a lot harder now. I didn't touch anything on the motor (other than the case and sprocket, of course) during the process. I checked the alignment and it seems to be pretty spot-on. I don't know how to tell how much shake is too much and what is normal. It starts to get noticeable at around 6,000 rpms.

3) As I was realigning my back wheel, I noticed that the tire is closer to the right side of the swing arm than it is the left. Is this something I should be worried about? Like I said before, I checked the alignment (using a flat board, touching both wheels) like it said in the Clymer and it looks good.

2 and 3 could be related. Hell, they could all three be related to one another. What do you ladies & gent's think?

How is your chain tension?

Did you removed the wheel spacers when you took the wheel off (any chance they got reversed)?  That would explain the off-center wheel.  I'd think you'd notice that it was off centered when you rotated the wheel checking for bindage but you never know.

The vibrations could be coincidental.

Check your motor mounts.  I noticed vibration and was wondering about it..... ::)

Then the next Monday when I do my usual walkaround inspection I noticed that a motor mount nut was completely missing  :o

Check that they're tight  ;D

Chain tension is set right.

I'm almost 100% positive I put the rear wheel back together properly. The alignment with the front tire is right on and it rides straight as an arrow.

I checked the motor mounts and gave them a good proper tightening with a torque wrench.
