Timing Advance Question
« on: July 29, 2009, 05:11:14 PM »
At what point does the timing advance kick in? 2500+ RPM?

Thanks!

I think it's at full advance around 3500rpm. It begins advancing around 1200-1400rpm. Long time since I timed my bike so #'s are an approximate guess.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

I wonder because, I still have issues with bog (at low rpm, like taking off from a stop) that go away like flicking a switch.... it just bogs then works itself over some kind of hump, then pulls hard. Based on that I wondered if the timing accelerator was sticking and causing this.

I think a number of things can cause that bog. Having a low gear ratio(front & rear sprockets), plus a heavy rider can cause the bike to pull grudgingly from stoplights. Certain carb related issues. Overall ignition timing, etc...

If you want to rule out the advance mechanism, it's a simple matter. Scribe a mark on the ignition plate to mark its position, then remove it. The advance mechanism behind it should slide right out for easy cleaning and light lubrication.
