Rusty spokes. New or re-finish?
« on: July 30, 2009, 09:14:23 AM »
Hey all,

My spokes are pretty ugly. All the chrome is gone and they are pretty oxidized. The rears aren't too rusty bc the original owner never cleaned the bike. They are absolutely caked with gunk from 12,000 miles of chain wax and road splatter.

For now, I am just patiently sanding them down with some emery cloth, but there's only so much I can get at, and soon enough they will be ugly again. I'm tempted just to rattle can them to death and hope for the best. Either way, I have to take them off to do it right.

So, am I better off getting these re-finished or should I just get a new set? The rims are in decent shape, and only have minor pitting. The hubs are real good too, so the spokes are the only thing that warrants any real attention.

I'm on a bit of a budget too, so a complete powder coat is probably out of the picture...

Thanks guys!

Paul

Hi,

new spoke sets, zink plated are very cheap, probably in the worst case $40.00 (CB750???) for each wheel.
Just calculate who long you would need to clean them and rezink or rechrome them.
You cannot polish them only, they rust again. My advice, go for new spokes.
