What to clean the clutch with?
« on: July 30, 2009, 06:01:45 PM »
OK, starting to collect parts.  Found a low mile clutch for my 550 but it has been sitting on a shelf for several years.  I want to clean it up properly before bagging and oil soaking it. It will be a while before it is needed.  What is the best cleaner to use on the friction plates?  Brake cleaner?

Your using... used friction plates?  Brake cleaner won't hurt it.

Yea, the clutch was a gimme.  Story is it was taken off a 76 F model.  Bike was wrecked in 76 or 77 with only 800 miles on it.  Front end, frame and lower engine cases were destroyed.  Owner eventually parted it out and sold off everything that was useable but never got rid of the clutch and full carbs rack.  They had been in his garage in a cardboard box on top of a shelf ever since.  I got both for a few Miller Lites and some good conversation.
