Race Keihin CR31s - where to get parts?
« on: July 30, 2009, 01:40:54 AM »
The starting woes on the CR750 casued me to take the carbs off last night and do what I should have done at the start, ignore the stamping that said CR750 on them and actually take everything out to check it's right and set right. Guess I was looking for an easy ride there!

First check the air screws - variationof half a turn to one and a half turns out so reset these all to one turn out.

Next, the slow jets which should be #60. Well - I do have one of those!  :D

Of the other three, none had sealing washers, all were #55s and one was snapped in half with a missing top half. The rest of the jets will be check with the float height tonight but then I hit upon a question after a quick internet search, I can find main jets for these but no-one seems to sell sir jets, slow jets, needles etc.

Does anyone have experience of tuning these old style keihins and know where I can get the jets I need? I thought about Sudco's site but haven't found anything obvious there for the old carbs....any (helpful :D) suggestions gratefully received....and that doesn't include selling the carbs LOL!

Try ordering through sudco or a sudco distributor. They might have what you need.

http://www.sudco.com/Carburetor01.html

This is a tuning guide for the FCR but should help with the CR also

Try searching the slow jet part #   N424-24  as listed here:

http://www.keihin-us.com/list.htm

quite a few distributors here in the states, not sure about UK. Dynoman.net is a good source for Sudco parts, and has gotten me jets in (somewhat) short order.

These guys talk like they have everything, site is under construction but maybe give them a call (Manchester):

Problem is with most of these sites, they're talking about the new Keihin CR smoothbores not the old original race kit. I'm drawing a blank with all of these good suggestions folks. Here's what I need jus in case someone has them on the shelf...

Air jet    200 - 4 off
needle    R CZ - 4 off
Slow jet    No. 60 - 4 off

CR carb parts.

The newer CR specials have nothing in common with the old. I have the old tuning book also.

I have all the parts for the old.

Email gone and over to you Mark....main jets are now sorted so we're getting close!

Actually this got me to thinking...I wonder what the market is like out there for these CR original carbs. There's a lot of them surprisingly in UK classic racing, so I wonder if it would be worth re-manufacturing the jets for these?

Just a thought... ???

In a lot of countries the only carb's permitted on a CB/CR replica are the old ones! Most councils rather see them go than come, so they make it as hard as possible. Even OEM are often not allowed.
Worked years for some of these bas........ am glad I quitted that bunch.
Better sorry for failing then for the lack of trying.

That's true here too - the CRMC will not allow the modern smoothbore CRs on the grounds that they have a choke lever and not ticklers. Once the thing is running what's the problem with having a choke lever?!

Some of the bureaucracy of these groups is amazing.

Why do you ask Mick ?  ;)

I think a good set would sell for 2, maybe 3 hundred pounds...and I'll buy yours for that  ;D

A very clean set with no issues, depending on the market will go for 500-1000 pounds GBP. The market is very fickle though so sometimes you can't sell a bank of four for 500 quid and others people are offering a grand with no questions. The trick is to catch it right and of course in these difficult times, that's easier said than done.

Thanks Lordmoonpie, I was thinking around $2000 Aussie dollars which is around $1000 pound.
These carbs have only had methanol in them, done 70 quarter mile runs and have a pile of jets to go with them, they have the race kit velocity stacks and covers still on them.. ;)

 Hijack.....

 For you Euro guys..

What's the difference between a pound and a quid ? or are they the same?
 Just curious..

hei lord,

I had quite a lot of luck mixing and matching jets between Keihin, Mikuni and Delorto and even manufacturing some from simple brass screws that I drilled on the late.

Have a local guy who sells me delorto mains at 1.50 euro a piece and I managed to make them work with my mikuni's and keihin's.

post  a pic of those slow and mains and i might be able ot tell if it can work for you too

Hey TG - I'll post some pics for you. Looks like I might be sorted soon but worth knowing if I can easily machine some things that will work from other makes.

I'm OK for mains though - they are the one part that is interchangeable with modern Kiehins so easily available.

It's the slow jets that look to be the tricky ones - shoulders and pieps and lots of teeny tiny holes.

Fishhead - yes, "quid" is slang for pound so they're one and the same thing, i.e. 50 quid is 50 pounds....but then there's monkeys and ponies as well :-)

throw in some measurements too while you are at it.

nice that you found mains, thing is that when you start putting together a good range tha goes form 110 to 150 (X 4), cost piles up and 1.50 euro mains come handy. Hope you dont need as many but when I started with my VM's I had no idea where to go.

these were off a GS750 with 115 stock, so i thought to myself: OK lets go with 135 and err on the rich side to start with. Bike ended up running with 145-150 for best power, go figure.
