Flunked the Garden Hose Test
« on: July 30, 2009, 05:37:27 PM »

I’m planning my first real road trip on my CB750 K6 come September.  I’ve put about 1000 miles on her since a rebuild two years ago  (yep – that’s not a lot of ridding) and feel confidant that this bike can handle a 500 miler.

Anyway – I felt the need to test the ignition system in case of rain,  so I got her up to operating temp and sprayed the plug wires with a mist from a garden hose.  Just like my departed CB750 K2, the K6 sputtered and would not start until she dried out.

I don’t have the funds for new coils/wires.  Anyone have a suggesting for the best way to waterproof the secondary ignition system.

As the saying goes: "Back in the day" before electronic ignitions we sprayed the crap out of all the ignition wiring, distributor, plug wires, etc., on our Jeeps and offroad trucks with Silicon sealer spray.  I haven't looked for it in a long long time but you might check your autoparts store, maybe offroad shops.

Give this a try:  http://www.fppf.com/siliconespray.asp

I've got the same issue, thinking about some new rubber grommets and a little RTV sealer around the wires to keep the moisture out.
These bikes dont die, they hibernate until the right person wakes them up again.

Clutch, stock plug caps often become porous and sometimes will leak to ground even when dry.  New NGK caps are reasonably priced and exact replacements. on new projects I trim primary wires @ a 1/4" and spooge dielectric grease into cap rubber when installing new caps, and run a bead of silicon sealer around wires at coil mound. check wires for chaffing, and if suspect, sheath with heatshrink. luck g

somewhere on here Motobunny has a fantastic weatherproofing guide for these bikes.  She oughta know, she lives here in PDX where rain is a way of life.

Clean all the connections that you want protected, and then coat them with dielectric grease. Also put some in the plug caps. I  have had to ride in the rain a lot when I lived in Washington, and this helped tremendously. You can get the stuff at any auto parts store.

Over here in the uk were we get more rain than sun Lol, we use electricians insulation tape wrap it round the end of your plug cap and keep wrapping it till you have gone part way up your HT lead forming a water proof joint, up on your coils were your leads go in seal up with some silicone that will help  ;), cheers Mick.
