O.K. so here is where I am at in the adjustments.  I am able to fit the .002 feeler gauge completely between tappet and the stem (on the rear first cylinder), so I begin to rotate the adjustment screw clockwise to tighten it so the .003 does not fit.  Here is the problem I run into ... I check to see if the feeler gauge can go through and it can, but only partially, as if part of the tappet is making contact with the stem so I am unable to glide the feeler gauge completely through.  Is that normal?  Here is the kicker, I am still able to fit the .003 gauge as well.  Am I doing something wrong or is this thing screwed up?

You said you can't get the feeler gauge through, and then you said you CAN get it through.  Which one is it?  .002 should fit all the way through.  .003 shouldn't.  The point at which the adjustment screw touches the valve is fairly small.  You're not going to have an issue with the feeler gauge going halfway in.  If you have the .003 gauge and it feels like it stops, that's exactly what it should do. Good luck!

It seems to me that I can only get the .002 feeler gauge partially through and not all the way.  Its as if part of the tappet is making contact and obstructing anything from passing completely through but allowing stuff to half-way slide in.  Is that possible??

It sounds like you have the adjustment too tight.  The gauge either slides in or it doesn't.  But to make sure, remove the adjustment screw and inspect the bottom surface where it makes contact with the valve.

There's a guy here on the forum, maybe in the for sale section, who sells the slightly bent and pointy feeler gauges designed for this application. I bought a set and couldn't be happier. Oh and made in the US of A. He also sells plug gauges, battery acid testers, and feelers for the points. I bought everything he had. It was very reasonable. You should be able to search for it and get the right tools.
