Has anyone wore out a Bicycle?
« on: August 02, 2009, 08:41:47 AM »
Lately I am back on my bikes, need the excercise.
Riding a US made Twin bar Ballooner, probably a Clevland Welding or similar.

Still has skip-tooth chain & sprockets, newest chain could be is the 60s! Changed tire, pedal.. finally about a year ago. Original seat paint bars, etc... it a full blackout bike so the newest it could be is around 1945ish.

Somtimes for a few months at a time I put 300 miles a month on it.

Do these things EVER wear out?

While not a old as your bike I have a 1973 Peugeot px10 10 speed that I ride regularly since I bought it new.  I even have a parts bike for it as certain parts are difficult to find.  I could upgrade it to modern running gear but I like the old school aspect of it.  It gets a lot of compliments from people who know bikes.  Recently I was in a bike shop with it and the guys working there (all younger than my bike) got quite a kick out of it.

Been some NICE finds here of lo-miles 70,s 10 spds. And they look good.I think my brother had a Peugeot, I had an Apollo back in the 70s.

We have a Monday Nite Cruiser Ride here, the young crowd really seems to like the older stuff.. we get like 40 bikes out, real mixture..

Doing street riding you're probably not going to *break* the chain, but if you got a new rear sprocket, bottom bracket and chain you'll probably notice a major difference in how it rides.  If you're really dead set on keeping that same chain, use this it's great stuff. Lubes AND cleans, but it might take a bit of it to clean up that old chain. :)Too bad you can't really tighten bicycle chains, that'd be even better.

I really love bicycles and working on them in general because unless you're really working them hard, they'll last forever with regular maintenance.

If you're going to ride it a lot, I still recommend looking at all the bearings/bearing races, etc etc so on just like you would an old motorcycle.  It'll feel like a whole new bike. They're just brothers from another mother, anyway. :D

In the mid 80s riding 1/4 pipes Yes. Now i ride an 81 schwinn world tourist 10 speed. Girls bike and brown to boot. No one will ever steal it. I also have an early 90s specialized rock hopper. They wont wear out but the schwinn does have some very wimpy rims. I do have to be careful.

Peugeot exported quite a lot of bikes to the U.S. in the 70's.  Most of them are not really "collectible" except the px10 model.  All the Peugeot models are good riding bikes because of the longer wheelbase due to the forward swept forks that was a common design trait on French bikes of the era.  If you see a px10 for cheap grab it.  Even the other models are good bikes for little $$$.

my trek antelope mountain bike is going on 14 years old now and it still has the original chain. i've replaced the rims and spokes is all because the aluminum rim wears with lots of brake usage

I've worn out a couple.  All you have to do is let them sit unused for ten years or so. ;)

It does depend where and who made them..

I dragged one out the other day from the 40,s. everything was original..replaced one rim as it was rotted almost thru, probably from a sprinkler or sinking in the ground. Oiled it up & good to go..

The original, well at least 40 yrs old CHAIN TREAD tire held air as did the back.. got about a few weeks out it before the tire started splitting.. about 5 inches lon.. :o got me home tho..

Damn flat tread old  hard tires, went into the  skateboard/BMX park, rode straight up along the 45 degree bank and  it put me on my side.. :-[

recently, i finally decided i needed to finaly go through the boxes of photos of my mom from when she was a baby to just before she married my dad. a couple of the pics show mom on a BSA bicycle. i had no clue at all that they used to vuild bicycles. i THINK my uncle Anthony (moms brother) still has the bicycles in their basement. if so i'm going to try and talk him out of the boke. that would be a really cool memento of my mom.

I have no idea what kind of bike it was but it was blue and rust colored. The rust color was where the frame was rusting through. Some one had left it in the basement of the place we were living and I put a chain on it and got some new tubes and away I went. It was older, much older than me. Much older than my mom, who is now 58. I rode it off a curb one day and the frame split in half. So does that count as wearing it out?

My dad has an old old old bike with some sort of goofy chain, it alternates between long and short links.  Maybe I'll go get a pic of it tomorrow.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

I bought a 10-speed Huffy when I was in fifth grade. It lasted me until my freshman year of college, when it "wore out." Both shifter cables broke, the brakes never ever worked well, it was a piece of crap. I replaced that with a Magna Excitor (dual suspension!!one1!!) which immediately broke down on me and got stored for the winter. I ended up replacing the shifters with some nicer units, I put on different handlebars, brakes, brake handles, etc., to the point where it was almost good. Then, while doing a nice stoppie, I took it too far and flipped over the handlebars, bending the pedal shaft inward and effectively totaling the bike.

So then I found an old abandoned frame on campus, and added all of my parts: brakes, bars, wheels, etc. It was heavy as #$%* but it worked. That summer I had to commute to work via bicycle, so I pulled an old Schwinn 10 speed out of my parents' shed. It lasted for about five months, until I t-boned another bicyclist that couldn't decide which side of the sidewalk she wanted while I was heading towards her downhill at 25mph with no brakes. After that incident, the front wheel was touching the back wheel. Oops.

I ended up picking up an '87 Bridgestone bike. Its large frame fits my 6'5" frame well. I've only pulled it out once this season, since I've come to prefer my two-wheeled vehicles with their own motive force.

Well I didn't wear it out, but I lent my good bike to my son in Boston. It disappeared overnight. Does this count?

I have really only worn out one bike.  It was the first real mountian bike I got.  A lot of miles on the trails riding full tilt along with quite a few involuntary dismounts really took their toll on it.  I recently sold it to one of the local youths, and now have a much stronger and expensive bike. ;)
