I bought a 10-speed Huffy when I was in fifth grade. It lasted me until my freshman year of college, when it "wore out." Both shifter cables broke, the brakes never ever worked well, it was a piece of crap. I replaced that with a Magna Excitor (dual suspension!!one1!!) which immediately broke down on me and got stored for the winter. I ended up replacing the shifters with some nicer units, I put on different handlebars, brakes, brake handles, etc., to the point where it was almost good. Then, while doing a nice stoppie, I took it too far and flipped over the handlebars, bending the pedal shaft inward and effectively totaling the bike.
So then I found an old abandoned frame on campus, and added all of my parts: brakes, bars, wheels, etc. It was heavy as #$%* but it worked. That summer I had to commute to work via bicycle, so I pulled an old Schwinn 10 speed out of my parents' shed. It lasted for about five months, until I t-boned another bicyclist that couldn't decide which side of the sidewalk she wanted while I was heading towards her downhill at 25mph with no brakes. After that incident, the front wheel was touching the back wheel. Oops.
I ended up picking up an '87 Bridgestone bike. Its large frame fits
my 6'5" frame well. I've only pulled it out once this season, since I've come to prefer my two-wheeled vehicles with their own motive force.
