buckeye newbie!
« on: August 02, 2009, 09:37:37 PM »
hey there. been lurking for a bit on here, finally signed up an account. i have a 1973 CB750 that i got about 3 months ago from one (of six) of my uncles. it has been passed around between them for about 5 years or so. one of them got it at a garage sale (not running). got it going in short order. rode for a season or two, then gave it to another uncle who rode it for a bit. wash rinse repeat. after it made the rounds, the last one with it didnt really need it as he already has 2 other bikes that he rides regularly. none of his other brothers wanted it back. one of them said to call me, so he did. said he would give it to me for free if i wanted it, otherwise he was just gonna put it on craigslist or something. uhhhh  free bike? why WOULDNT i take it ???

its in pretty damn good shape for being 36 years old. about 35K on the clock. only issues (that ive found so far) are:

a) seat is in bad shape. needs recovered at the least. or just replaced outright.
b) electric start does not work. the kicker works though, which is fine with me because real men kick start their machines. right?  :P
c) there is some sort of "knock" in the front end, when you turn the bars from side to side. im not exactly sure whats up with this. it seems like the axle is moving a little bit or something? he said it had never been an issue to him other than being annoying... going to look into this.
d) could stand to be painted probably, also a nice dent in the gas tank.
e) tach is very slow to respond. probably needs cable lubed/replaced.
f) front brake is a little soft. needs fluid changed.

oh yeah, and the original exhaust is long gone. replaced with unknown dual 2-1 system. came with a wixom brothers fairing straight out of the 70s too. i wasnt really digging the look so i took it off. will put it back on if im going to take a trip or something though. other than that, its pretty good. a little dirty in some places, but nothing some elbow grease cant fix.

a little about myself: im 28. born and raised in columbus, OH. graduate of THE ohio state university. rode dirtbikes as a kid. natural progression to streetbikes once i was old enough. my daily driver is a 93 kawasaki EX500 streetfighter/rat bike that i ride rain or shine. as long as there isnt snow or ice on the ground, ill be out there. looking to get a track bike here soon. hopefully before the summer is over.

bike pics. dont mind my very cramped garage :( you can see my 500 in the background sporting the buell headlights and dirtbike bars  ;D

not too bad for 36 years old...

nice dent there :(

wixom fairing

my buddy says i should cafe it, and honestly, with any other bike, id be inclined to agree with him... but this thing is pretty much original as far as i can tell. i know honda made a billion of these things, and i know a bunch have been cut and chopped and raced or whatnot. i think im just going to try to keep this one as original as possible and clean it up. if i want a cafe racer, there is always craigslist :)

GO BUCKS!

Welcome to the SOHC 4 web sight!  There are quite a few of us around Columbus with old bikes.  I currently have 4 CB 750s in my stable and love them all.  You will have to meet us out at the King at 5 in Grandview (around the corner from the Lennix) on Monday evenings for Columbus Vin - Moto group around 7 p.m. for some drink and food.  Check out the vendors listed on the sight, you can get a complete paint kit pretty cheap (especially with that beautiful orange)!  Also sounds like you may want to check your bearings in the stearing stem (there is a running thread on how to replace them with All Balls kits).  You can get seat cover kits on eBay reasonably, I purchased on for my 76 CB 750 SS if you would like to see the quality before ordering (I am on the east side of C-bus).  Check the start button is making contact and clean before replacing the starter.  While replacing the fluid do yourself a favor and upgrade the brake cables with plastic covered braided units.

Good luck, great bike for the price.......
