Ghetto head gasket fix.....anyone try it?
« on: August 03, 2009, 11:52:40 PM »
So an old Honda SOHC guy I know told me about a head gasket trick that supposedly works; find a nylon bungee cord that is of a proper length and diameter to fit around the motor and stuff it between the fins, and ride it, cord melts, seals gasket, and then cut or scrape away the excess. Hs anyone heard of or tried this? I'm at the point where I'm getting a little oil on the pants, but don't want to pull the motor until the season is over. Any thoughts on why this would or would not work?

I went with the Raul method of rolled up kitchen roll jammed between the fins seems to work ok and inexpensive  ;)

I haven't heard of that one either, but if it works...it works.  Just remember that when you get your engine apart you'll have to clean the stuff off if you go that route.
I've seen the trick where a short length of appropriately sized cotton rope was tapped between the fins with a screwdriver and mallet, it absorbs quite a bit of oil and is easily replaced.  I'd try that if mine leaked enough.
Cheers.

I never heard if the technique so can't really comment.  It might work to seal a head gasket, assuming it is the head gasket that is leaking.   Often it is the "pucks" that leak.

The paper towel method is quick and cheap and easily removed.

If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Is that also known as a paper towel?   Never heard that term before, but that's what I'm thinking of.

Not quite a correct translation but you’re nearly right, “Bollocks” can = balls but can also mean you disagree with something.

“Dogs Bollocks”, is all about being chuffed, I think it’s all based on the fact that dog’s can lick theirs and they seem happy doing it. ;D

I have the same problem and am curious about the paper towel trick. Wouldn't  the paper towel just get hot and burn up?

According to Kurt Vonnegut, you will need to get to Fahrenheit 451 before paper will combust.  Besides, once it is oil saturated, you will need to get to oil's combustion point.  I did this trick fro a few years with no issues.

If your engine is getting hot enough to ignite paper then you have much worse problems than a gasket leak! :o ;D
