On the road - Need San Francisco mechanic/shop
« on: July 07, 2009, 05:39:16 PM »
Hey Folks,
I am leaving on Thursday the 19th from Vancouver on a pretty massive trip to the Grand Canyon.  I'm going to need to change my tires on the way, for various reasons I can't get any before I leave in Vancouver.  Can anyone recommend a shop to go to in San Francisco that can sell me and install tires, for a reasonable price? Any advice would be a huge help!  We are arriving on Sunday and staying a couple days, I'm assuming shops are closed on Sundays and Mondays just like up here?

PM Sean Condon (SCondon). He can probably give you a reference.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

These guys helped me out on my West Coast Trip back in 2005.  I had a throttle cable shipped to them when mine broke in OR on the way to SanFran.

South of San Francisco is the town of Milpitas, where you can find:
South Bay Cycles

408-263-2475

Give Tom a call.  If he doesn't have what you need in stock, he can order it, and have it available if you give him a day or two. (It's a small shop so he only stocks the most popular tires).
He's a good mechanic for our old bikes, as well.

Cheers,

Thanks guys! I'm back home now.  I found a place there specializing in old Honda's.  Charlie's Place "A Haven for Old Honda's".  Can't say enough good things about them!  www.charlies-place.com

I think I'm going to do up a ride report (inspired by Shenanigans ), apart from a few issues the bike ran great for our 6000 km trip.  The big issue mechanically was a snapped chain in the streets of San Francisco that poked a hole in the engine case.  Charlie showed me how to patch it up with JB  Weld and it didn't leak a drop all the way home to Vancouver.  I got some sweet pictures of Charlies Place with about 20 or 30 old Honda's parked outside on the street, and a big CB750 mural on the wall.  San Francisco is an amazing town! Bikes everywhere!

actually we got caught in a couple lightning and hail storms.  Hail hurts pretty bad at speed!
