can't get throttle cable back on
« on: August 04, 2009, 04:49:51 PM »
I have a 1980 CB650 that I rescued from sitting in a garge unused.  Took the throttle cables off to clean the carbs and I can get the push cable in place, but I can't get the pull cable to fit.  I've looked at all the downloadable manuals and I can't find anything that helps.  I was able to find the routing diagram and I have them running in the right place along the frame of the bike.  I know I don't have the cables reversed because I didnt disconnec them at the handlebars. What is the trick? any tips?  This isnt my first throttle cable removal and reattachment so I know how tight they can be.  I can get the cable in, but its at the max holding the carbs at WOT.  Does anyone have a good picture of what it should look like at the carbs?

This is just a shot in the dark and the only reason I'm asking this is because I've done it myself. Is the throttle sleeve upside down?

Thanks for responding.  Are you referring to the throttle cable sleeve?  I didnt detach the cables at the handlebar end.  When I first had the problem my first inclination was that I had the push/pull cables reversed.  Which I looked at the throttle grip and easily determined that I didnt.  This is still bugging me.  I have put throttle cables on before and I know with other bikes that I sat there with needle nose pliers and used all my might just to get it in the right notch. with this cable it seems entirely too small to fit. Is it possible that the throttle disc has shifted? I looked at and it appears to have a set screw.

Try using vaseline on the little brass end.  You would be suprised how useful vaseline can be in the garage. ;D

My method would be to disconnect the B cable from the Carbs. The A cable is attached to the twist grip (sleeve, pipe, etc.). Now you can raise the carb slides far enough manually, while holding the twist grip stationary in closed position, to get enough slack to hook the A cable on at the bell crank.

Now reconnect the B cable.

if the cable's sticking in the sleeve to the point that you're putting vaseline on it, i would probably suggest getting new throttle cables to be on the safe side. i had a cable stick when i was riding one time (dirt bike, so single cable but still..) granted it's kind of an adrenalin rush, but it sucks.
