FRAME FOR A CB750K8 (value?)

I was about to take the saw to the frame of a 78 cb750 and I thought I should ask if it has any value.  I was going to cut it down and make an engine stand.  I would hate to cut up something that someone needs later, when I can use a bent frame just as good.

Well they're not making them any more, so one day they might be worth something I guess. The K8 is not that collectable at the moment though, so one less K8 frame won't make much difference in the grand scheme of things, I wouldn't think. Cheers, Terry. 8)

I would save the K8 frame and looke for something K6 or before. Those are very common, just look on this board. Only about 5 of use have K8s and all the others are K6 and older. Looking at both frames, I also feel that the K8 is a sturdier frame.

If it was a K0 frame I'd agree entirely, but the K8 was the end of the line, at a time when Honda was being killed in the big bike stakes by Kawasaki and Suzuki with their DOHC "Musclebikes", and the cosmetic changes from the earlier K's were not as readily accepted by the buying public. It's doubtful that a bare K8 frame will be of particular interest to a prospective collector.

This is not to say they weren't a great bike, and had arguably the best engine. I'm sure a K6 owner would say use the K8, or a K3 owner would say Use a K2 etc etc, that's just human nature. If I can't get the f@cking alternator rotor off my engine soon, you can have my whole F2, and I'll throw in an angle grinder, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Once again you speak wisdom. I am on the look out for another 78k scrap bike and I will just store that frame.  Right now I can have an engine stand.

well I think structurally the K8 frame was about the strongest. Thats why I would save it.

Hey there Quail I got a K 4 frame that I cut the top off so I could get the cam and towers out without pulling the engine (was in a hurry)  Oh Ive got  four other frames that are good Im up here in gods country Maine   just a thought  Craig  seven fifty four ever

Oh sure I just get done making the engine stand and I come in here and read the last 2 post.  Now I feel like I just aborted a 78 cycle fetus.  I guess that makes me a  Pro Bike Life person.  I have to go now so I can make up a protest sign.   ;D :D

OK TERRY here is the result.  I know it looks like an engine on an IV bag but I am making a harness and will use a small tank so I can start it before i install it.  I wrench for a living and bending over a lot hurts.  I like working standing up straight.  It is on casters.  I cut the bar that the center stand is on so that when I take off the engine the stand will store in a small place.

G'Day Terry, that looks pretty good, can you run an engine in that stand too? I want to build an engine stand that I can actually pick an engine off the ground with, work on it at a comfortable height, (bad back too) wheel it around my garage, and rotate it too? Trouble is, I can't make one compact enough.

I've "borrowed" a hydraulic scissor lift trolley from work (we got it for moving around.50 calibre machine guns off Leopard tanks) and it's good for working at a comfortable height, but is not the be-all and end-all. Evil Don Ballasch uses an electric winch to lift his bikes (or engines) onto specially made trolleys, and that seems to work well also. Cheers, Terry. 8)

Yes Terry that is my plan.  That is why I left the oil tank in place.  By cutting the center stand bar out I can stack it together, The stand only sticks out 6 inchs from the wall peg that I will hang it on. I just use 2  6 inch bolts to bolt the two pieces together through the engine mounting lugs.   I will make up the simple harness and wire it through one side of the frame, then I will make up a simple test panel to probe so I can check timing, dwell, alt etc.  I plan to pick up some rusty junk 4 to 1 system  just to bolt on and pipe it out the door exhaust hole.  My shop fan will move enough air for me to do the work on it I would do to set the engine up.  Sure will beat bending over or pulling the engine out to fix a leak. I like to work at chest level, just ask my wife!

 I will send you a few photos when it is done in the winter, sorry summer to you,( by the way why don't you guys "down under" fall off the planet? )

What about a bike lift? Isn't it worth the investment? With it you can also work at chest level on forks, tires, electrics, everything.

G'Day Raul,  Bike Lifts are great if you are just tuning or servicing your bike, but for working on an engine that you are building for horsepower, that you may have to disassemble and run several times before it's ready to go back in the frame for good, nothing beats a good engine stand. Also very good for cleaning the engine prior to painting, if you intend to do it in one lump. Cheers, Terry. 8) p.s., thanks for the magazine mate, beautiful pics!(geez I wish I could speak Spanish!)
