CB750 Head Swap
« on: August 05, 2009, 10:11:19 AM »
I just purchased a used cylinder head on eBay to replace the damaged one on my K2 (http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=53129.msg568978#msg568978. My question is: Should I use a factory head gasket or aftermarket? I've found that Cometic makes one that is around the same price as Honda. Is it any better than stock? A buddy of mine uses their head gaskets on his BBC race engine and he's making over 1000hp! Of course, I know there's a lot of difference between a Chevy V8 and a 750cc motorcycle engine, just thinking they must be a good brand.

Since I'm a total newbie, are there any other gaskets or hardware I should replace at the same time? What do I need to watch out for. I don't want to end up ruining my motor.

Cometic makes good gaskets.  So does Honda.

You should get a full top end gasket kit and replace them all while you have the engine out and apart, especially the rubber oil seal pucks under the cam towers.  Don't forget the cylinder base gasket.  Removing the head will most likely break the seal and cause it to leak after reassembly.  As far as other hardware, it all depends on how much work you want to do, how much you want to spend, and how well you expect your bike to run.

Thanks for the advice!!
Does Honda sell a complete top-end gasket kit, or do you have to buy them all seperately? Do you know the P/N? Do any aftermarket companies sell these?
