help me with these spokes!!!!!
« on: August 05, 2009, 01:01:53 PM »
I laced my 16" rim to my 550 hub. I copied the pattern off the same exact tire on my bike. A few of the spokes are now too long and sticking inside the rim. Did i do somthing wrong or do i just need to trim them down. I took it to a few shops and they had no clue. Told me i did it wrong because there are no outside spokes, and that it must be way out of whack if the spokes are sticking out that far. i trued it up pretty close. Here are some pics. the spoke nipples dont sit down in there very flush either. Is this just how they are? Please help. i just had the rim PCed and bought a new tire.

I've laced a lot of wheels. They've all needed to have the spokes trimmed down. All insides, traditional patterns, or whatever. 3 to 5 is pretty standard.

Dremel tool makes quick work. Clean up your dust. Grind em down flush to the nipple.

Your wheel is fine. Nice to know you are now smarter than your shops, eh?

I'm slightly confused as to why the kit does not have outside spokes as well. I don't see why it would be dangerous the way it is, but it's not how the stock spokes lace up. If it's true and you have the cross pattern correct, grind 'em down. Been there, done that.

The 16" Harley style conversions all lace on the inside. Twas always and twill always be.

The spokes are so short no way they can wrap an outside spoke around the hub flange and back to the centerline of the rim.

Well, sure looks like mine did when I did mine.  Maybe I can find my thread.

Bought a small cut off wheel and ground them down. Hope i ground them down enough. I double lined it just in case. The tire is on and thank you for your reassurance that i wasn't screwing up.

Mine were every one.  Ron helped me through it.  I can't find my thread.  It had pictures too.

Glad you got through it.  It took me forever to get mine down to the nipple.
