Topic: Is it just me or do others have this problem too?

(Sorry if there are other posts out there on this topic...I searched for a while and couldn't find anything.)

I recently purchased new pipes and gaskets for #1 & 4. I took all the old off and when I went to put everything back together I couldn't get the kickstand to clear the #2 pipe.



It is also not aligned in the back...#2 is too far into the bike...and this is the same exact pipe that was on prior  ...


And the centerstand does not align with the rubber pad on the pipe...


I took off and re-installed 4 times and even wedged in a block to hold the pipe out while I torqued the nuts down but it eventually moved and blocked the kickstand!  

The only thing I think may have occurred was the center stand whacked the bracket 2 or 3 times with all the pipes off. It seems pretty strong though and not sure that would have bent it but maybe?  

Has anyone else delt with this before?

Dont force it!
Did you put the brackets on backwards or inside out? I had a hard time remembering how they went together too. It took me a few tries. I replaced all four and repainted the brackets. Maybe you have the brackets on the wrong side. Those look like 500/550 pipes right?  It will come together. You are almost there.

Thanks Bender. I actually never took the brackets off - just loosened them. 

Yes, thep the bike is a 1974 550 K0.

I've never seen one of these bikes in person but from the pics, I'd say the pipe needs to run behind the kickstand. Just from the angles you've posted from both ends, that would be my guess. I'm thinking you took them off with the center stand down and didn't notice where it was in relation to the kickstand.

Hehe, yes you are both correct....   No wonder I couldn't find the question anywhere in the archives. 

I found this picture to prove to myself that indeed I am a little slow on the uptake at times.

My 550 came to me with the same problem you describe. Struggled with it until I posted a pic here and someone pointed out the pipe belongs inside the side stand. Good ol' POs.
